Dr. Peter Pry is the Executive Director of the EMP Task Force.
Pry explains there are three sources of EMP: the sun, nuclear weapons, and non-nuclear weapons.
The entire world would be affected, putting electric grids and critical infrastructures as well as billions of lives at risk. Pry believes it is inevitable that we will be struck by a Carrington-class geomagnetic storms, for its not a question of if, but its a question of when will that happen.
A second EMP threat stems from nuclear weapons detonated at high altitude of 30 to 400 kilometers. A single nuclear weapon detonated at that altitude would create an electromagnetic field that would cover all of North America, most of Canada and a good part of Mexico.
Non-nuclear EMP weapons, or radio frequency, weapons are a third cause for concern. A non-nuclear EMP weapon has very limited range, typically a hundred yards or so, but the electric grid is so fragile that if you had a terrorist or criminal organization with multiple radio frequency weapons, they could cause a nationwide blackout by attacking high-voltage (HV) transformers.
As the chief of staff of the congressional EMP commission for 17 years, he notes a number of concerns. Aircraft would fall from the sky and automobiles would fail to start. Water would no longer be available in homes. We only have enough food to feed 326 million people for 30 days and the food would begin to spoil within 72 hours.
Should a nationwide blackout occur for as long as a year, the EMP commission reports 90% of our population could starve to death, die from disease and societal chaos, and collapse.

If the author knew it, you can guarantee our enemies knew it. He wasn’t revealing anything.
thx for the map but you did realize I was being sarcastic....the wording in the article was very strange...but they do say younger people do not know geography or history...
Just make your garage into a giant Faraday Cage.
True. Russia smacking us with a hyper-sonic missile holds the same weight.
Steel out buildings are the best.
How practical or accessible though?
Your garage would be better in both.
I hope you know this is the newer thing to keep the masses freaked out and dependent on gubermint.
A more immediate threat would be muslims with rented backhoes going afer fiber-optic trunk lines.
I know a contractor that will put a metal roof on a house. It’s a bit pricey but a lot of people do it for looks and durability. They owners don’t realize the EMP shielding effects of the metal roof.
Twinkies are EMP proof. Nuke proof too. No refrigeration required.
As regards getting gasoline without electricity, all it takes is a hand pump. You can pop the covers off the tanks at any gas station. They’re not secured. I’ll grant you that most people don’t have these hand pumps but they’re pretty simple devices, and I see them on pickup trucks regularly where they carry around different liquids that need to be pumped out of 50 gallon drums.
More to the point than getting the gasoline out of the tanks in the ground is the very limited time the gasoline would even be viable.
I watched a couple of seasons of Z Nation and Walking Dead and wondered the entire time how people are running vehicles on gasoline that’s been sitting the ground for years. I realize it’s science fiction apocalyptic bologna, but that’s kind of insulting really.
I read the book in one afternoon....it was that compelling.

...or we are the country whose name shall not be spoken.
“Apparently only the really old cars and trucks without computer chips will be able to run after an EMP.”
I’ve long thought that 0bama’s “cash for clunkers” was less about saving fuel and improving pollution standards and more about making sure the commoners don’t have the kind of vehicles that would work in a post EMP world.
That, plus simply getting rid of anything that reminds people of how great America was before 0bama.
If they are not running at the time of the EMP attack they will most likely be not be negativity affected.
LOL, Thanks to you and to upchuck for me going back over that one.
Dumb-ass millennial.
“EMP is almost as big of a hoax as global warming”.
Please explain why it is a hoax. I’ll look for your explanation.
Hmmm, it belongs to Denmark, I think - sooo, it's part of Europe? Although, after consulting my Risk board....
