Russia: Hole drilled from inside International Space Station capsule

The hole in the Russian Soyuz spacecraft attached to the station was spotted on Aug. 30. The crew discovered a leak that was creating a slight loss of pressure and plugged the hole with epoxy and gauze.

Prokopyev said at a news conference the cavity started from the capsule's interior and "it's up to the investigative organs to judge when that hole was made."

The astronauts' quick identification and repair of the hole demonstrated "the crew was ready for any developments," he said.

The hole didn't pose a danger to Prokopyev and crewmates Serena Aunon-Chancellor of NASA and Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency during their return because the section of the capsule it appeared on was jettisoned before the fiery re-entry into Earth's atmosphere.

Roscosmos chief Dmitry Rogozin said in September the hole could have been drilled when the capsule was manufactured or in orbit. Rogozin stopped short of blaming crew members, but the statement has caused some friction between Roscosmos and NASA. Rogozin has since back-pedaled from the statement,

Prokopyev scoffed at the idea the hole could have been drilled by an astronaut, saying, "You shouldn't think so badly of our crew."

The “depressurization” wouldn’t hurt anyone inside? Just asking.

So... someone up there did it. Bring them all home and replace the crew. Review the video tape and begin investigation.

Absolutely my first thought. That little AI bot that bowed up on the astronaut needs to go.

Some Russkie drilled a hole in the wrong place and didn’t tell anyone. Then probably tried to put tape on it something.

Repaired with epoxy and gauze? Makes sense that there would be a shortage of duct tape and chewing gum in orbit.

Maybe someone was trying to hang pictures?

Or just that someone was... bored.

This is Old news. We already knew this because of the pictures showing the Walk marks from the drill bit on the inside.

It was an escape route for a very small astronaut.

It was probably during manufacture, you can’t throw away a couple of million dollars of manufacturing product for a simple hole that is repairable.

Ideally you would not want to MAKE a hole, but obama happens.

Obviously, no duct tape was on hand.

Interesting..... It would seem to me that a patch on the outside failed leaving the hole. The hole was not apparent until the patch on the exterior failed.

In most trades, one’s skill includes the abiity to patch errors unnoticably

“Is the russian space ship wafer thin?”

Yes, in places where they can get away with it, the same is true of American space craft.

I’d hate to break this to you, but you already drink recycled water here on Earth.
