CHICAGO (WLS) -- Gov. Bruce Rauner caused a firestorm within the Republican Party by admitting Thursday in an exclusive ABC7 interview that he had recruited four people to take his place on the ballot in November.

"And I said, 'I'll step aside, I'll give you huge financial resources, you run for governor, I'll support you. You have as good or better chance to get than me,'" Rauner recalled to ABC7. "All four of them said no."

Cook County Commissioner Sean Morrison, a leading state Republican, is now calling for an emergency meeting of the State Central Committee to address the Rauner revelation, which he and others are calling a deeply troubling matter.

Yep, it’s over. Being a Republican in Illinois, even a very liberal one, is a hopeless, pointless exercise. The billionaire JB Pritzker is the new governor. The state will sink ever deeper into debt and the productive, taxpaying middle class will continue to flee.

This is a trend that I have noted for the past several election cycles. Those who would run as Republican face an almost overwhelming uphill battle, fraught with an onslaught of negative media coverage and indecent coverage of themselves and their family. All the while those who run as Democrat receive nothing similar. Who in their right mind would desire to be subjected to this? It is no wonder that fewer men and women of mettle would face this.

Article leaves out the context. Madigan funded a “conservative” to run against Rauner third party who was taking votes from him. Knowing that he couldn’t win with about a third of his support gone, Rauner attempted to recruit someone who could. It’s actually kind of selfless.

He’d have done better by putting his resources into cultivating a smart young Hispanic candidate (perhaps female) in Mike Madigan’s heavily Hispanic district.

This turd controls the fate of the state of IL by winning 17,000 votes in his last election and spending $1.5 Million against his Democrat challenger who pulled 7,000 votes. No, a Republican probably can’t unseat him but so what, fund and develop a solid conservative democrat and send the longest-serving politician into retirement!

Notice how much money the “third party” candidate who was allowed to stay on the ballot took from unions. https://illinois.gop/sam-mccanns-entry-governors-race-latest-example-self-dealing-using-politics-profit/

Of course at the time, Morrison laughed off concerns about Rauner's inablity to win a November election and gloated when Rauner beat Ives in the primary, saying he was thankful GOP primary voters choose the "electable" candidate.

Yeah, but his real sin was not giving others in the GOP a heads up so that they could get "their share" or otherwise position themselves to cash in on inside knowledge.

I lived in the Chicago area, 2001-2017. I heard, in 2013, that Rauner was as liberal as many Democrats, so I didn’t vote for him in the primary or general election. If I lived in Illinois, last month, I would have voted for State Senator McCann. He agrees with the republican platform more than Rauner does.

I hope that all members of the IL GOP State Central Committee, who ever endorsed Rauner, will quit, this month.

Yes, taking nearly all your money from labor unions is SO conservative. Just so conservative.

Exactly. I’m done with the ILGop. I’ve already begun planning my escape to a neighboring state. I was done after our supposed republican state senators voted for Madigan’s state budget tax hike over Rauner’s veto. Morrison is just as bad as those turncoats. Ives was a clown who took Madigan money just like McCann. They all deserve each other in my book.

Who was the most conservative candidate, in that race? Gov. Rauner signed a bill that let Illinois become a sanctuary state for illegal aliens, and Sen. McCann opposed that. Rauner signed a bill that uses tax money for abortions, but McCann opposed that.

The most conservative candidate was the one who would stand up to Madigan. Rauner did... McCann just took his money. It’s because of the state senate that Raunder’s veto of Madigan’s state budget was overridden and that goes directly to Morrison. I don’t think a failed businessman who owes millions to debtors is conservative in any way, shape or form.
