James Mattis' Resignation Has Conservatives Admitting It's 'Time To Panic'

President Donald Trump’s announcement on Thursday that James Mattis would be stepping down as secretary of defense in February was a shock to many conservatives ― and not in a good way. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said in a statement that he was “distressed that [Mattis] is resigning due to sharp differences with the president on ... key aspects of America’s global leadership.”

I spent 22 years in the Marine Corps, deployed numerous times and was in combat three times. They don't take old men in the grunts, it's a young mans game or I would gladly go over to serve my country again.

I agree completely. As Mattis himself said in his resignation letter the President deserves a SecDef that is more in line with his foreign policy vision. General Mattis did something unusual in Washington, when confronted with irreconcilable differences with the President he did the honorable thing and resigned. Jeff Sessions could have taken note of that. They all serve at the pleasure of the President.

Where I have faith is in the fact that the people that President Trump will be looking to become the next SecDef will all be against this pullout and will not come onboard if he doesn’t change this policy (as is their right). I think he will be forced to realize this is a wrong headed policy and will eventually listen to reason.

I remember the Bengasi report for the question asked time and time again about whether we could trust a given militia. I would imagine the guys there believe they could be shot at by anyone and anytime.

No, I'm not qualified. But if I were qualified to take the SecDef job for Trump I wouldn't do it. As General Mattis says, he deserves a SecDef that is aligned with his views.
