Jim, I agree completely with your call for civility and polite language on FR. Our common speech in America has been coarsened to an appalling degree, and whatever happened to watching one’s language in the presence of women?
An effective argument or counterargument requires nothing more than facts and logic. Ad hominem attacks mean one has nothing meaningful to say in rebuttal.
Perhaps they didn't receive enough attention from their fathers and need to continue juvenile behavior, hoping someone will acknowledge them. Any attention, good or bad helps fulfill their emptiness.

However, there was a GREAT tongue-in-cheek post (for which I searched but couldn't find) that spelled out for noobs da rulez. It ran something like this:
-If anyone joined after you, even if it was one day later, they are a noob.
-Everyone on FR no longer watches TV and if you post about TV they will tell you you're stupid for watching TV though they have a good idea of what is "good" TV.
-If you post about your gun, someone will tell you you don't have enough stopping power. The same people will also point out that anyone who uses a gun to defend the self but doesn't kill the bad guy, needs more range time.
-Everyone on FR is debt-free and any noob with so much as a dept store charge card is part of the steeple class.
-If you don't have a 5-yr supply of food, water and ammo and a bug out bag and a Faraday cage for an EMP then you are future Zombie chow.
I was the recipient of some posts like that once upon a time. That guy's long been banned.
LOL! Ahem...I mean...thank for providing me with the ground rulz. Unfortunately, I sold my Faraday cage in my last garage sale. Isn’t that just the way? The minute you get rid of that thing you haven’t used since you bought it, you’re gonna need it! Same thing happened when I got rid of my Ronco Pocket Zombie Zapper! Now what’ll I do?? Everything you said is true. Some people do seem to judge others by their sign-up date, rather than the quality of their communication. Can't help 'em.
When I first joined FR, I had already spent years discussing politics in online forums, and a couple of those years were spent as a mod, herding cats ;-)
The only thing that made feel like a noob, at the time, was the high level of discourse here. It could be daunting to offer my opinion on some threads.
Perhaps I've become spoiled over the years, because it doesn't feel that way to me now. I don't venture outside FR anymore, so I've probably lost a bit of perspective in that regard.

You may be new to this forum, but I can tell you’re not new to patriotism and love of country.
At the end of the day, that’s what this place is really all about.
The boys have always been a bit randy around here, but we've normally kept such talk within respectable (and lighthearted) limits. In my observation, most of us have kept to that, but not all. There has begun to be a bit of slippage over the line.
Hopefully, JimRob's missive will help to correct that.

My biggest problem is with #%* leftist %#+*. They trigger me to say things I wouldn’t dream of saying, normally in polite company.

In all my years at Free Republic, I have not been called out once by an admin, but I have found myself wandering into those waters recently. A very good reminder, Jim, to keep a civil tongue (or keyboard) when posting here. We’re all pushing the boulder (for the most part) in the same direction, and it’s easier if we’re all behind the boulder instead of in front of it.
I read through every comment, and not one poster mentioned the correlation between vulgar posts and intellectual laziness.
If something angers a person to the point that they feel compelled to make profane personal attacks, they indicate a lack of discipline, a lack of reason, and a lack of vocabulary...
FR rocks!
