Bronx-born Penny Marshall, who found 70s sitcom success on Laverne and Shirley before stepping behind the camera for Hollywood hits like Big and A League of Their Own, died Monday night at her California home. She was 75.
Yes she did (die) peacefully at her Hollywood Hills home, said her publicist Michelle Bega. She passed away from complications from diabetes.
Marshalls triumphs as a director broke new ground in the male-dominated movie industry, and she became the first female director to score a $100 million gross with Big in 1988. She turned the financial trick again with A League of Their Own four years later.
But she directed only one feature film after 1996, and kept a low acting profile with cameo roles in films like Get Shorty and Blonde Ambition.
Penny was a girl from the Bronx, who came out West, put a cursive L on her sweater and transformed herself into a Hollywood success story, said a statement from her family, referring to the monogrammed wardrobe of Marshalls blue-collar protagonist Laverne De Fazio.

Must’ve been all that milk and Pepsi.
Ahh. sorry to hear that. may God rest her. really enjoyed her tv “tough but good hearted” characters.”
Well...damn.
I always felt bad she was divorced from Rob Reiner. I’m thinking he went Hollywood and she was too plain. I think she prob loved him and was hurt by that.
RIP Penny. Thanks for the laughs.
She is on her way to “Ork”.
Lets see how many people can figure that one out?
She was a close friend of Carrie Fisher and, at Fisher’s funeral, she was unrecognizable. Really huge. I had no idea she was that old.Funny lady.
I can't recall exactly why but I remember this film as one of the funniest I had ever seen when it first came out. I watched it over and over again on VHS.
Now there’s two women that were quite attractive in there youth but aged extremely poorly.
Penny Marshall was in the ‘Mork & Mindy’ pilot episode, playing Laverne and so was, ‘The Fonz.’ ;)
They were playing it on one of our ‘free’ Government TV Channels all yesterday - must’ve been in tribute.
It is one movie I’ve really enjoyed, too! Loved Tom Hanks in it, and Gena Davis - even Madonna and Rosie did a good job.
Great story - and it’s based on History, so there’s that! :)
Did I win a Ham? I’d really like a Ham for Christmas! ;)
Sorry to hear.RIP Penny Marshall. And so another mile post of my generation and it’s light passes by. Sucks getting old....
“Laverne?” /squiggy
But it beats the alternative.
Hanging out with “Mork?”
Hey, my bags are packed. I’m at peace. The Good Lord can come for me at any time. I’ll hear Him knocking.
I just caught a few snippets of “League of their Own” last week.
One was arguably the funniest line in the movie....”There’s no crying in baseball”
Another example that the writers are the heart & soul of any movie/TV show.
“Did I win a Ham? Id really like a Ham for Christmas! ;)”
Why yes you did. You will need to go to Ork in order to pick it up.
