Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey on Tuesday appointed Rep. Martha McSally to fill the Senate vacancy originally created with the death of Republican Sen. John McCain.
Sen. Jon Kyl, a Republican, was appointed to succeed McCain on an interim basis. McSally, a Republican who lost a bid for Senate in November, received the appointment to McCain's seat on a permanent basis, to take effect after Kyl departs the Senate on Dec. 31. McSally will immediately have to stand for election in a 2020 special election to determine who serves out the final two years of the six-year term McCain won in 2016, meaning she would almost immediately mount a campaign after taking office in 2019. If successful, she'll have to turn around and run for re-election in 2022.
Martha [McSally] is uniquely qualified to step up and fight for Arizonas interests in the U.S. Senate, Ducey, a Republican, said in a statement published by the Arizona Capitol Times. I thank her for taking on this significant responsibility and look forward to working with her and Senator-Elect Sinema to get positive things done.
McCain's widow. who met with McSally Friday, Tuesday tweeted her approval of the choice.

Whoop T. Doo
The McCain's approval is the first indication that this was not a good choice.
Don’t know whether to laff or cry...................
Or maybe because Cindy McCain was all over media saying she’d make a decision soon about whether she wanted that seat-like it belonged to her-Gov Ducey told her to be gracious and congratulate McSally-then sit down and shut up-it is about time someone told the arrogant McCain family that they don’t own a senate seat...
meet the new boss, same as the old boss. :(
At least glad that Cindy or Meghan didn’t get the seat ... and at a minimum McSally at least is pro-life.
I think this explains backing down from shutting down the government. They said “if you don’t fund the wall we’ll give you another senate seat...if you insist on funding the wall you’ll lose another seat.”
On one hand I think its a big mistake to appoint someone who just lost.
On the other hand, Im relieved its not a McCain.
I really wish Kyl would have just served out the 2 years.
I want to be certain before responding, you are referring to McSally in the above comment, correct?
Why on God’s green earth would anyone care if Cindy McCain approved?
1. Maybe she will do more good than harm.
2. Maybe she will run a better campaign next time.
3. I like that it says “screw you” to the Dims, putting her in the seat next to the Leftist b...ch she ran against in November.
Mountain, meet molehill.
After McCain and Flake I no longer believe a word any Senator from Arizona says when they are campaigning. We'll see if she's pro-life.
Boy, Kelly Ward just dropped off the face of the earth, it seems. Was she even considered?
she needs to run in 2020 for remaining the 2 years , then 2022 for full 6.
Is she the female version of ‘Roberts’???
Because the McCain machine is a very powerful presence in Arizona, and Cindy McCain now controls that machine.
Very, Very nasty, too.
The McCain machine did everything they could to destroy the Tea Party in Arizona politics.
She’s running for State GOP Chair.
