Is the National Rifle Association dying?
americanthinker.com ^ | 12/17/2018 | Peter Skurkiss

Liberal opinion writer E.J. Dionne, Jr. of the Washington Post thinks so. He writes that the power and influence of the National Rifle Association has been broken. What he serves up as proof is the 2018 election, the one where the Republicans under the inept leadership of Paul Ryan lost the House of Representatives.

It is worth considering Dionne's argument if for no other reason than to gain insight into the liberal mind. After all, he speaks for many on the Left, and to defeat the enemy it is necessary to know them.

Before he makes his case that the NRA is fading, Dionne takes the required swipe at those in flyover country, the structure of the U.S. Senate, and by implication the Electoral College. He says:

And let's concede up front that the vast overrepresentation of rural states in the U.S. Senate tilts the system, undemocratically, towards those that claim that government is powerless to take meaningful steps against mass killings. That fact that Wyoming and Idaho have as many as Senate votes as New York and California underscores the challenges that remain.

“...we’ve got to figure out a way to reach them.” (Millenials)

They want to be be ‘new thinkers of great things’, to change or save the world, to rebel against the establishments of old people.

Most have never shot a gun, don’t know the feel of it, don’t know the feeling of having actual, real power in their hands.

Tough to figure...

If the NRA supported leftist voters’ choices like Schwarzenegger, the results would be no better.

"But who under, say, 40 even knows who North is?"

It's not who the President is according to celebrity worshipers. It's what he does that's important. Under California NRA leadership, we were subjected to an assault weapons ban for a decade.

Under several other presidents from more conservative backgrounds, we got rid of an assault weapons ban and fought off quite a few attacks against the Second Amendment. As conservative voters, we're not going to focus much of our effort on areas hostile to American culture or populations that swing to vote for the likes of the Clintons.

Thanks for reminding me to send more money to the NRA: the only organization that has really done much good work.

How much money would we have wanted to spend in the courts of those states? The Supreme Court was also leaning too far to the left.

“...his bitchin’ about the makeup of the U.S. Senate...”

That’s a real shame, since the equal representation of each state in the Senate is one thing that is untouchable in the U.S. Constitution. Article V says that that cannot be amended away. And maybe that is the real goal of Dionne, Dingle et al. Replace the Constitution (since that’s the only way to eliminate the current structure of the Senate). And guess which Amendment(s) won’t make it into their new and “improved” Constitution?

you have to put up the maximum effort on the first encroachment because if you don’t, there’s no stopping it later...

but in this case, they dint even try

just remember the last line, “Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

There were similar results from searches regarding the other unAmerican states. If it were up to me, the NRA wouldn’t waste a dollar in any of those courts controlled by unAmerican mobsters.

The NRA always gains membership when gun rights are threatened, and loses members when people think they are secure. Many people, especially in solid “red” states aren’t worried about it because they know with Trump in office nothing will pass on the federal level, so they stop paying dues. If another Democrat gets elected the NRA will get more members and money, just like under Obama.

Disagree with you about the NRA, GOA, etc. For all the talk of compromise, can you name one gun control bill passed in the last 50 years that the NRA supported? I know of none. Hundreds of bills have been killed without ever getting to a vote though, thanks largely to the NRA. And the GOA, JPFO are just too small to have any influence. That’s why the left never bothers to attack them. The GOA in particular seems to exist mainly to attack the NRA with baseless charges of “compromise”, and siphon off membership and money from the NRA, while accomplishing nothing in the real world. Put your support where it actually does some good, the NRA, NRA-ILA and NRA-PFV.
