Liberal opinion writer E.J. Dionne, Jr. of the Washington Post thinks so. He writes that the power and influence of the National Rifle Association has been broken. What he serves up as proof is the 2018 election, the one where the Republicans under the inept leadership of Paul Ryan lost the House of Representatives.
It is worth considering Dionne's argument if for no other reason than to gain insight into the liberal mind. After all, he speaks for many on the Left, and to defeat the enemy it is necessary to know them.
Before he makes his case that the NRA is fading, Dionne takes the required swipe at those in flyover country, the structure of the U.S. Senate, and by implication the Electoral College. He says:
And let's concede up front that the vast overrepresentation of rural states in the U.S. Senate tilts the system, undemocratically, towards those that claim that government is powerless to take meaningful steps against mass killings. That fact that Wyoming and Idaho have as many as Senate votes as New York and California underscores the challenges that remain.

> California
I don’t think California’s suicide is the NRA’s fault.
You have had the best of everything out there.
We don’t feel sorry for you.
Yes, and their price went up to 40 a year
You neither know nor respect Col. Oliver North, current President of the NRA?
The article is an obvious attack piece on the NRA by the Washington Post.
This E.J. Dionne, Jr. and his bitchin’ about the makeup of the U.S. Senate and the Electoral College sound exactly like the unhinged comments of John Dingle (berry) last week.
I forgot to mention, that in 2016 the NRA raised more than $400 Million Dollars, that’s almost half a billion dollars.
The entire concept of a free country and freedom is dying.
When you have a species that is purposefully miseducating it’s young in order that they vote a certain way, then the entire species is dying.
110% agree.
> You neither know nor respect Col. Oliver North, current President of the NRA? <
I both know and respect him. And the raw deal he got in the courts years ago still bothers me. But who under, say, 40 even knows who North is?
Consider a 30-something who is watching the news. He hears, “Up next, Oliver North talks about gun control.” Will this 30-something be motivated to stay tuned, and soak in what North has to say? I doubt it.
Like it or not, we live in a glitzy age. For maximum effect, the NRA needs a glitzy president. Glitzy, and solid.
Many people have left the NRA money and property in their wills. I don’t think the organization will ever die.
Oh no, Idaho and Wyoming has the same representation as California and New York. We can’t have that - we don’t moron... Congress is represented by the people.
Yeah, the best of the Bush’s opening our borders for their free labor express buddies.
Best of what?
Show me someone who craps on us remaining California conservatives and I’ll show you a jackass Quisling that wouldn’t know what an American or a Conservative is to save their miserable democratic socialist life.
They can laugh at the canary in the coal mine while they turn tail like the yellow-bellied pussified cowards that they are, if they don’t help us stand and fight they deserve dictator for life Kamala Harris taking away their guns and making their kids accept gender fluidity.
They have their uses and have bad experiences with the “other 2”: GOA and the other 2nd A group. Never EVER been a member of the NRA.
I sent 2 emails to inquire about membership and those same 2 groups didnt respond at all. And they’re bitching about membership when they cant even respond to emails?
FReepmail me if you want to be added to or deleted from the list.

What a hoot! A 30 something watching the news. Where? On his iphone, where he can only stay on topic for 11.3 seconds.
Our view of the news is not even considered by young people, and it doesn't matter who the President of the NRA or any conservative organization happens to be.
I’m a GOA Life Member, and help the financially each year. I gave-up on the NRA years ago.
> A 30 something watching the news. Where? On his iphone, where he can only stay on topic for 11.3 seconds. <
That’s a fair point. Nevertheless, we’ve got to figure out a way to reach them. Because the Left IS reaching them, through liberal professors and a biased media (Facebook, Saturday Night Live, etc.).
Now, when it comes to the NRA, a flashy, somewhat popular president simply would be better than one who is not.
I don’t know if he’s a member, but Bruce Willis would be my choice.
And let's concede the fact that this idiot does not understand the government he works in.
Nor does the government stop mass killings.
Matter of fact, not only do they participate in them (Waco comes to mind), but governments are responsible for more mass killings that any other entity in human history.
Stalin, Hitler, NK, China, to name a few.
What can the do in Commifornia except sue?
I emailed Dionne once, in his reply he said something to the effect he has to crank out a certain amount of “content” to order so he was pretty cynical about it all.
