This is further shown by the DOJ telling the WSJ today that they are outraged that Trump might intervene to end the prosecution of the Chinese CFO (based on an illegal extraterritorial application of US to nationals abroad).

Because they really really really wanted to retrieve the text messages but are only the premier law enforcement agency in the entire world, therefore lacking state-of-the-art technology.
The FBI is corrupt to its core, but the saving grace is it's incompetent. They thought they destroyed the messages and then tried to claim a "technical problem", which just coincidentally covered the period in question. And these are the bozos allegedly protecting the country. We're in the best of hands.

It also means that if you go abroad you can be arrested and prosecuted in Germany, for instance, for posting ‘hate speech’ on FR that is critical of Islam even though that is protected speech in the USA where you wrote it and posted it.
