In a recent item for The Federalist, David Harsanyi considered the M16 rifle one of the five most innovative firearms in American firearm development history. Yet something equally significant can be said about the semi-automatic AR-15 derived from the M16. Second to the muskets used in our revolutionary and civil wars, the AR-15 may be the most important firearm in American political history.
All told, more Americans have fired more rounds from more AR-15s for personal defense, defensive firearm training, marksmanship competitions, individual practice, and hunting than from any other rifle. For that reason, the AR-15 is the primary firearm upon which Americans would rely if they had to fight for freedom today.
Here are 10 reasons to own at least one AR-15 and to become skilled in its use.

Nothing wrong with an AR-10,but I already own an M21,a Remington PSS,and an M41B Swede.
The author totally missed the most important reasons.
A complete miss.
Your friends, family and neighbors have AR-15s and you can pool ammo and magazines. You can even scavenge them from government stores.
In the US it’s the universal rifle.
I prefer the mini-14 in every category...except the one above. And it’s the most important of all.
I think the premise is specious.
No one should own “An AR15”
Everyone should own at _LEAST_ two with parts to assemble a third. This should be a minimum.
Two is one, one is none.
So-called assault rifles are the answer to liberal virtue signaling.
They drive them nuts.
Why I don’t like the AR-15.
1) Too flimsy and easy to break. It had to have been a design consideration, so that lost weapons would quickly degrade and become useless to an enemy.
2) Its optimal use is outside, at mid range. Other rifles are better at long ranges; shotguns are better at mid to shorter ranges, pistols at short range; and a pistol-knife combo indoors.
3) It is a bugger to clean properly. I remember long hours with toxic solvents and even dental picks to get out much of the hidden carbon. Comparatively, the AK-47 has only three field cleaned or serviced parts.
4) It evokes a visceral response in fools who see you just carrying it. And tragically some of these fools are cops. While they will notice far deadlier weapons, they are less likely to freak out and shoot at you because of them.
Yup. Excellent point.
I have a bag of cotter pins and several firing pins as spares.
Amish drive buggies but that doesn’t mean they can only have flintlocks.

as long as it’s mil-spec it should be good.I do know that Rock River Arms makes a good product.
AR-15s limit the damage Democrats can do.
The author states that the AR-15 was derived from the M-16. My recollection is that the AR-15 was developed as a semi-automatic sporting rifle before being adopted by the USAF and converted to full automatic capability and subsequently forced upon the other services by Robert McNamara in his push for standardization in all services.
“No one should own An AR15

From the article:
“Here are 10 reasons to own at least one AR-15 and to become skilled in its use.”
The article recommended owning at the least one AR-15 and becoming skilled at using it.
I would say that is good advise.
I remember when you could not give an AR-15 away back in the 1970s. Critics vented their spleen on it as being ..”inaccurate, too small for deer, and (gasp) PLASTIC!”
Then came Mel Tappan with his book Survival Guns and his articles in GUNS AND AMMO on Survival. Suddenly anything AR was IN!
Politicians, at that time, had no problems with rifles. they were after the handguns. As actress Lee Grant yelled on Good Morning America, back in 1981, “THE NRA IS A RIFLE ORGANIZATION! THEY SHOULD GIVE UP THEIR HANDGUNS AND THEY CAN KEEP THEIR RIFLES!”
When they noticed no one was guarding the rifle ownership, they made a grab for the rifles.
#1 rule for owning a rapid firing semi-auto of any type (AR-15, AR-180, AK-47-s, Mini-14...The Politicians do not want you to have one.
“I dont like the AR-15”
Do you have a rifle that you prefer to the AR-15?
FReepmail me if you want to be added to or deleted from the list.

Yeah, except there are now states with 10-rd limits and how will they confiscate millions of standard magazines? In NJ & WA they’ll search every car stopped for other reasons. If the driver says not without a warrant, the po-po will go rogue & throw him in the cruiser until the warrant arrives.
Glad I live in a free state. Even in unfree states the law requiring registration of scary black rifles is disregarded like by 90% of owners and the govs haven’t sent out their flying monkeys yet.
We’re not allowed to have those in my state. But we can smoke dope and gamble....
11. Liberals don’t want you to have one.
12. The light weight and recoil means even a small woman or young tween can handle it.
Pistols are good as a back up and for carrying concealed when you cant sling a rifle. They are NOT optimal at any range. They have far less energy than the average rifle round. Same with knives x 10. A knife is something you may be able to carry when you cant even have a pistol, but its the last type of fight I would want to get in.
