Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reveals Jewish ancestry at Hanukkah celebration

Hanukkah celebrates the miracle that oil thought to be enough for only one day burned instead for eight. So the Jewish festival of lights is also, in a way, a celebration of surprise.

A temple in Queens got a small dose of surprise on Sunday - the final night of Hanukkah - when Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the New York Democrat with a knack for dramatic flourish, told those gathered to light the menorah that her ancestors were Jewish.

‘‘One of the things that we discovered about ourselves is that a very, very long time ago, generations and generations ago, my family consisted of Sephardic Jews,’’ Ocasio-Cortez said. These are Jews who settled in the Middle East, North Africa and southern Europe after the Jewish diaspora. They were expelled from Spain in 1492.

1492 is the year the last bit of Spain was liberated from Muslim rule.

This means she must apologize to Elizabeth Warren for her ancestors killing all of Warrens ancestors.

Too bad neither group had been thorough enough.

These are Jews who settled in the Middle East, North Africa and southern Europe after the Jewish diaspora. Some of those people landed in Puerto Rico

I'm to believe her ancestors were Jews, expelled from Spain, and were dumb enough to flee to Puerto Rico which was subject to the inquisition to practice their religion openly? Pretty stupid. Wouldn't have worked. There may have been a few, living in the mountains away from the population centers. But the likelihood of Jews practicing their religion openly in any Spanish possessions pre mid 19th century is pretty low. But it's a nice story. Better if she discovers her Jewish ancestors married a Taino.

Historians in Spain say that about 90% of the people of Spain have some Jewish ancestors, given that some Jews stayed in Spain and converted to Christianity. Yes, some Jews did settle in Puerto Rico at the time of the Inquisition and did so as hidden Jews. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_in_Puerto_Rico

Her knowledge of history in general and Jewish history in particular are pathetically lacking. Perhaps she did have Jewish ancestors on one of her lines. That’s surely possible. Many Hispanics do.

It’s entirely possible, if not probable, that she has Jewish ancestor(s), It is highly likely that her farthest back Cortez progenitor was born Jewish. “Cortez” is a known Converso surname. Conversos were Jews forced to undergo formal conversion, though many continued to practice their family’s true religion in secret. https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/cortez/489/

1492, eh? Well, that worked out great then! They obviously hitched a ride with Christopher Columbus! ;-D

Being sent to PR from Spain in 1492? That would be akin to being shipped to the moon in November 1969.

Does anyone think Spain was going to spend any money sending Jews to PR at a time when it would have been one of the most expensive trips on earth?

This makes no sense.

Maybe she was related to Hernan Cortez, the Conquistador who conquered the Aztecs.

PS Don’t tell the Mexicans.

Wait, if my daughter is converting to Judaism, does that make me half-Jewish by default?

To my knowledge there hasn’t been a reliable test for Sephardic ancestry that is generally available. Perhaps there is now.

At least until recently, all it could tell you is if you had Middle East origins.

She’d be just as likely to be Arab/Moorish as Sephardic.

Regardless, she’s an apikoros.

Fauxcahontas is a great gag name for a make-believe Indian, but what is a good nickname for a make-believe Jew?
