Regardless of the arguments attempting to deny the existence of fake news or down play its impact, the truth is that it has infected both journalism and social discourse.
The business of propaganda or creating false news for the purpose of manipulating public opinion is not new. People like Dan Rather have made a career of it, the New York Times built an empire using it and CNN created a worldwide brand, making the use of fake news an accepted format in the process.

The first amendment guarantees both free speech and freedom of the press. It is fundamental to the preservation of our republic. In the view of most people who respect our constitution, that freedom must not be tampered with. Subsequently, most of us believe preservation of our constitution must be our mission. So, the idea of restricting or altering that freedom is abhorrent to the majority. But, why shouldnt it be possible to apply some regulatory measures that can function in the spirit of protecting freedom?

Regulated speech is free speech?
Orwell would smile.
Fake News needs to be demonitized so that it killz itself.
Sure burn their studios to the ground and imprison all of their crazy leftist nut jobs.
When Comic Ping Pong Pizza was thought to be involved in nefarious activity, there was an effort among Hillary's friends in the media to declare that whatever was happening there was nothing and anyone reporting it, well it is only "fake news."
Donald Trump captured that meme and threw it back in the left's faces when he pointed right at CNN and all the other dolts and said, "YOU are fake news."
That is the true history of "fake news."
What is your simple idea?
Absolutely, by bringing these traitors to mob justice.
Shaming them might help.
It needs to be called what it is. !LIES!
Stop using Amazon.
Fake news has been around since printing.
The New York Sun got it’s start with a fake story about seeing bat-men on the moon, and on a slow news day the editors would just make up a tale about Viking ships seen sticking out of rocks in the desert, flying machines that picked up cows, flying monsters shot down by cowboys.
If you can remember back to March and April of 1966, the newspapers were full of stories about sunken cities found off the coast of Peru.
Remember about 25 years ago when Chinese rifles and ammo was banned in the USA? The news media had a field day showing three train cars full of confiscated ammo. But you never heard that someone looked closer and found it was perfectly legal Russian ammo, not Chinese.
Remember the rigged tests on trucks to “prove” they would burst into flames when wrecked?
As someone once said...”If you do not take a newspaper you are not informed. If you DO take a newspaper you are mis-informed.”
Fake news is not new.
It’s been around since humans learned to communicate.
But, when “fake news” is used to influence people and change the course of governments and countries and cultures and the entire world. then, fake news is no longer ‘just fake news’; it is a weapon, just as dangerous as a war which forces people to “change their minds and ways of doing things”.
The U.S. has been a victim of downright lies in politics and government, since forever, and we are not the same country that the founding fathers intended to create.
Cause when the democrats are in power they would use those regulations to censor the truth. There can be no censorship.
However things can be done, like the President banning all the a-holes from the press briefings and freezing them out of all interviews, ect.
I understood it to be more about transparency created through either public shaming or advocacy.
I think regulating would be more like actually requiring licenses and fining, suspending or revoking in response to violators of government imposed parameters for what can be said. You know, like the left is already doing.
“Some” reigning in the media is a terrible infringement of the 1st Amendment. The right needs to be much more aggressive with their own outlets; TV stations, newspapers and digital media.

I am beyond dubious that the FAKE, or lying, news can ever be stopped. Pres Trump has created his own news outlet with his Twitter messages for all Americans to read and the fake news media to obsess about. I would like to have Pres Trump have a frequent, possibly weekly, TV appearance. He could detail for Americans, item by item, the issues needing disclosure, such as illegal immigration, and the cost to all taxpayers for the maintenance of each new person who enters this country. Facts and figures for building the wall and what and who are standing in the way of progress in getting it built. Other issues as to the reason sanctuary cities are allowed to exist and why one judge can countermand a Presidential order. The double standard for law breakers in the government and the ordinary citizen. Voter fraud that cancels legal votes. On and on. Just give us the names, groups, cost to our govt, etc. A weekly report would be just fine. It would keep the Fake Newsers in a tizzy and pro Trumpers better informed as to what the hell is going on in their country.
I like it! And in the meantime, wouldn’t it be nice if members of congress would just stand up now and then and refute the lies being told to and about all of us?
I would approve the approach of removing the “public figure” protection against defamation lawsuits when the defamation is based on speculation or simple animus (as in: no disputable evidence is available to support the defamatory allegation).
Beyond that, the cure to fake news is public firing of its purveyors - through the power of the purse/viewership.

A community is low on a Respect scale if common courtesy is withheld from large groups of people on account of their political attitudes.
...in a downright despotism opposition is dangerous whether the despotism is official or whether it is unofficial...
A community rates low on the Information scale when the press, radio, and other channels of communication are controlled by only a few people and when citizens have to accept what they are told.
See how a community trains its teachers
...these students are being taught to accept uncritically whatever they are told. Questions are not encouraged.
And if books and newspapers and the radio [and facebook and youtube and...] are officially controlled the people will read and accept exactly what the few in control want them to. Government censorship is one form of control. The newspaper that breaks the government censorship rule can be suspended. It is also possible for newspapers and other lines of communication to be controlled by private interests...

The newspapers of a real democracy meet these tests...
Newspaper checks.
1. Balance of coverage
2. Disclosure of source
3. Competence of staff
