Everybody knows San Francisco is the city with glittering streets well, glittering because of all the puddles of shattered glass from car break-ins. But theres another pervasive property crime here that doesnt get as much attention because theres no evidence left behind. Its called porch piracy, and its the swiping of packages off peoples front steps. All thats left is an empty doorstep and the residents frustration.

Or, there is always a new take on the old “instead of office chair, package contained bobcat” idea. :

#15. New movie about these thefts coming out next year. It will be entitled “Gone in 60 Seconds: The Package Capers”.
Rent a post office box!
My local post office, after I fill out a short form, will allow me to use their street address as my own and they will accept packages for me from UPS, FedEx, etc.
A tad off topic but don’t mail gift cards in a greeting card-——a big theft item by dishonest carriers.
.
I hear that one of the companies has their delivery people taking a photo after theyve left a package at the door. At least they can prove it WAS there.
I’m happy too have my new “Nest Doorbell” which keeps an eye on the front porch 24 hours, 365 days a year ... on video. I’m also a big proponent of other Nest products.
I monitor my deliveries. I bought a lot this Christmas, odd for me as I have no family. But if I’m expecting a delivery, I track it obsessively [almost].
It’s on my calendar, as it get’s closer, I fit it not the schedule. And the delivery peeps deliver until 11PM or later in LA.
Video Doorbells [I like Nest] ... they film 24/7. And you can talk to the person coming up to your packages even if you are not home as your video is watching everything they do.
I nominate your town ;-)
I wonder what the thieves think when they open the box only to find a dozen gerbils.
“PARTY AT MIKHAIL’S!!!!”
Nest is google. I have a nest thermostat that I bought before google acquired them. Google is bad. I wont give them my business or data.
I do have a ring doorbell.

Maybe to porch piracy is a Soros-funded scheme to convince more and more people to want to be part of Google nest.
But Nest is a better doorbell.
I've sold a lot of stuff via eBay. I always use signature confirmation. One time, months after a sale, a buyer complained to eBay that he never received the package I sent and he wanted a full refund from me. I keep excellent records.
I presented proof of the USPS signature confirmation that he signed for the package at his address. That stopped the investigation and shut him up. Some buyers are crooks that hope to get something for free while they don't care if they damage a reputation of a seller.
A Nest doorbell is much better.
How do you like the thermostat?
I had a friend years ago, fairly rough cut cowboy from Florida, He flew into Miami years ago and while he gathered all his belongings, a car drove up and grabbed a suitcase and went down the road, he was pee’d off and came back in a week with a suitcase of rattle snakes marked in spanish snakes, he left it out by the curb and in minutes it was gone, a car full of Black yoof had grabbed it, and in about a mile they wrecked when they opened it and the angry shook up snakes came out..not saying it was right, but he enjoyed it..
There are companies developing smart locks where vendors are given access codes to customer’s homes inside. That is the future.
True. We did a bathroom remodel that included removal of a 20 year old toilet and replacement with a new one.
We put the old toilet on the side of the house that night and left it to be dealt with the next day.
The next day we went out to discard the old toilet and it was gone.
