Californias Bay Area is facing a recycling crisis, as China ramps up requirements for recycled materials.
Recycling the wrong items can get you a fine of $26.60 in West Contra Costa County. In Marin County, Mill Valley Refuse Service will simply refuse to take your recyclable waste until it has been properly sorted. Eventually, residents can be charged with the cost of dumping the waste in a landfill.
Were hoping that people will see what they did wrong and clean it out, then pick up the cart the next week, Mill Valley Refuse co-owner Jim Iavarone said.
But the problem lies not with the waste management companies, or even the centers to which they ship their recyclable materials. In fact, it starts on the other side of the world. Before now, China was taking everything and now theyre saying, Hey were not taking this stuff anymore so the processing plants got stuck with it, Iavarone said. He elaborated:
[Then] the processors turned to the haulers and said hey were not taking this stuff anymore so then the haulers got stuck. Now we have to turn to the consumer or resident at the street level and say, OK we cant take this stuff anymore either, so you have to do more sorting at home. It starts at home.
Many people put questionable things in the cart hoping that somebody will deal with it down the line, Iavarone continued. In the past, it went unnoticed because China was buying it. So we became very lax. No longer. Now we have to deal with it.

I might take a trip to San Fran just to sneak through neighborhoods, putting the wrong stuff in their bins.
They need to put their elected officials in the back of the garbage trucks and press the pack button.
And you can crap in their driveways.......................
Some of my neighbors still sort the plastics, green glass, paper, etc. I watched the truck - all that crap goes into one bin. They almost have to pay someone to take the paper these days, and it’s one thing that will naturally decompose.
My parents live in West CCC. They vote D. Going to have to ask them about this. I’m sure they’ll love it.
Train homeless people to go through each can to insure there’s only the right stuff. They can charge $19.95 per large can or $12.30 for a small to sort them. That’s 75% and 50% of the fine respectively.
Undercut the government with the underground economy!
Also it would get the homeless in all the tony Lefty neighborhoods ... since the California Left rates themselves caring and all that they shouldn’t mind.
Another in a long, long list of reasons not to live in CA.
Recycling mainly is virtue signaling; however, many people with damaged/mutated logic centers in their shriveled brains spend inordinate amounts of time “sorting” their waste. Hahahaha.
My wife has relatives in Germany where you can be fined for failure to recycle and incorrect recycling, ie, plastic in the paper bins, etc. They have people who inspect and police such things.
Now it turns out that they figured that "somebody" would be a chinese serf. Go figure, enlightened Californians getting a twofer: supporting slave labor and not recycling all at the same time.
It all goes to the same city dump.
The market for recyclable material has collapsed, and the dirty secret is cities can’t sell it, so they’re dumping it in with the trash into the landfill.
And still giving you a tax (ahem, “ticket”) for failing to do that which is now useless.
Theyre concerned about what goes where in a recycling bin, but suddenly lose all that concern for the environment when tons of human feces get hosed off the streets into the drainage systems.
And the garbagemen have three DIFFERENT TRUCKS that each cost $100K+, staffed by completely different guys, running the same route three times a week!
The real problem is, many things aren’t economical to recycle. People want to believe that they are, but it’s not the case.
They would pick thise items up for free, for starters. Another big no-no is incineration. It is a very effective way to get rid of certain wastes. But it’s just not part of the image.
What’s the “carbon footprint” of thousands of trucks driving around picking up garbage out of different colored bins and shipping it off to China by boat?
Exactly what has happened here.
We have to separate our trash into recyclables, glass, plastic, paper, cardboard and garbage.
But the city of Pensacola has no place to sell the stuff so it ALL GOES TO THE DUMP................INSANE!..................
Just like a lot of San Franciscans take a dump on the sidewalk. :) I mean, really?
This is why people just dump crap out in the country.
Why not flogged and jailed?
China had been burning our ‘recycles’ for energy. They no longer need the energy, nor the pollution.
