When Mexico's new president hits the ground running, he'll smack into Trump (takes office today)

MEXICO CITY — The honeymoon for incoming President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who will be sworn in Saturday, will be sweet and short, if it happens at all.

Awaiting him are a host of urgent issues, from a growing number of Central American migrants encamped at the U.S. border and the threat of a border shutdown to skyrocketing violence around the country, jittery foreign investors and energy policy issues.

He'll also need to address his people's seemingly impossible expectations, such as eradicating centuries of corruption and poverty during his single six-year presidential term.

But among his greatest challenges will be his unpredictable counterpart across the border — President Donald Trump.

I have strong personal and family ties to Mexico and am of two minds about this. On the one hand the guy is a leftist, I get that. On the other hand Mexico is in desperate need of a shake up. It's clear that, absent corruption and fraud on a scale California and Broward County can only dream of, he would have been elected President in 2012. During the six years since the Mexican political establishment has become so discredited in the eyes of the people that they could not prevent his election this time. He was the only candidate with the personal authority that could allow him to make the reforms the country desperately needs. Is he a Hugo Chavez in sheep's clothing or a genuine reformer? Time will tell. I genuinely wish him well.

If he lives long enough to make POSITIVE changes. It will be up to the drug cartels to decide.

In your opinion, will the entrenched powers-that-be let him do what needs to be done?

He’ll be compromised in 6 months. Mexico is controlled by criminals and corrupt politicians and there is NOTHING that can be done about it.

His Presidency ended due to the cancer from budget deficit.

“But here at home, there’s another threat - a cancer gnawing away at our nation’s health. That cancer is the budget deficit. Year after year, it mortgages the future of our children.”

I remember seeing “NO mas mordida” bumper stickers back in the early 90s but it’s stronger than ever thanks to the cartels.Something that ingrained in Mexican culture will not go away easily.

“Is he a Hugo Chavez in sheep’s clothing or a genuine reformer? Time will tell.”

If he is mainly a wannabe leftist dictator, we will see early efforts to control the organs of repression within the Government - police, military, judiciary, intelligence.

If he is a genuine reformer, we would see his early efforts aimed at the economy, education, crime and corruption.

If he is really more the political opportunist, we will find out later about many racket, kickback and payoff efforts to monetize his office.

Likely he will have to do some combination of the above, while juggling the incredible complexity of International affairs and a whole culture of 100 million people.

As you say, time will tell.

I pray that God helps him and his Administration turn toward the good when they can.

But it isn't really ingrained. Mexico used to be a very safe country. I lived there for three years in the late 70's-early 80's and I never was afraid to travel even into the desert or into poor neighborhoods. And I don't look at all Mexican. I went all over and was frequently alone and never felt in danger.

I suppose we'll find out. They may be entrenched but they have lost all legitimacy in the eyes of the people.

I suspect the opposition is in control of so much of the bureaucracy, that they will try hard to make him look like a bigger crook then previous administrations. Like those who are out of power, yet control all of the power here. While it is the press here, it is the drug cartels. That is, if he really is going to honestly try to defeat them. It’s always the power behind the scenes who control what happens in the country.

The writer’s claptrap TDS aside, if President Obrador is prepared to go to war against the cartels he will have a friend and brother in arms with Donald Trump. Those of us who love our nation want Mexico to overcome its criminal domination.

I agree. I grew up on the border(Texas) but the Mexico of today is nothing like the 70's,80's or even the 90's.

Remember, when Obrador legalizes drugs, you heard it hear first.

I used to travel in Mexico by road in the 1970’s. As long as we tipped the federales at their various checkpoints, we never had a problem. Now I wouldn’t try it.

The only way to change Mexico is to assert the drug exports into our country is an act of war and invade.
