Huge Earthquake Rocks Buildings in Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A 6.6 magnitude earthquake has rocked buildings in Anchorage, prompting people to run out of offices and seek shelter under office desks. The U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquake was centered about 7 miles north of Alaska's largest city.

Officials issue tsunami warning for coastal areas of southern Alaska after earthquake. There was a tsunami alert for Cook Inlet, the National Weather Service in Anchorage said on Twitter.

What a ride, that was the largest earthquake we felt in 20 years of living in Alaska. My understanding is that there are bridges and ramps that are down in Anchorage. They’re saying 7.2 about 30 miles south of me which puts at 7 miles north of Anchorage. All my reloading equipment is on the floor in my garage, cabinets were open and paint is all over the place and of course pictures came off the walls in the house. 30 minutes later and we’re still experiencing aftershocks.

I remember visiting Anchorage and seeing incredible photos of the 1964 quake, large gaps in street pavement with whole blocks of houses collapsed..... hope nothing so bad this time??!! It is a dangerous zone when the earth moves....

Daughter, Son-in-law and 2 Grandkids live in Eagle River, outside Anchorage. They’re okay, but most of the inside of their house was destroyed.

Also, power is out, so heat will come from the fire place, if the chimney is still intact.

Looks like a big one and major impact on Alaska's most populous city.

The tsunami warnings are issued automatically in these situations as a precaution I believe. Very rarely do the tsunamis pan out and hopefully that trend continues.

My dad was working on construction in 64. The quake ate all they were building and all the Caterpillar equipment. The company lost over a million dollars which was an enormous amount at that time.
