GOP senator: We would prefer to keep border open
The Hill ^ | 11/25/18 | Brett Samuels

Posted on 11/25/2018 11:39:24 AM PST by yesthatjallen

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) said Sunday she would rather not see the U.S.-Mexico border close despite threats by President Trump to prevent certain groups of migrants from crossing into the U.S.

"We would prefer that we keep it open, so let's work really hard to make sure that we're addressing the asylum seekers before they actually come over the border," Ernst said on CNN's "State of the Union."

The Iowa Republican was responding to Trump's suggestion that he may close the southern border if Mexico does not agree to hold migrants while the U.S. processes their asylum claims.

"I think the intent of the president is to divert any issues before they actually happen," Ernst said. "And so, of course we don't want to see the border close...but you know what? The safety of our nation comes first."

Ernst avoided criticizing Trump over his threats to close the border, saying “I think the president sees results any time that he does bring up an issue and he does lay down certain reasons why he’s doing what he’s doing."

She also declined to criticize Trump over his response to the killing of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Ernst disputed that the president is "giving the Saudis a pass" by declining to dole out further punishment or hold the crown prince accountable for Khashoggi's death.

"I do think we need to look into [the Khashoggi killing] further," Ernst said. "And we need to understand where the investigations are leading us. And I'm anxious to hear from a number of our intelligence agencies on this.

"Now, Saudi Arabia is a great strategic partner for us," she added. It is an important country when it when it comes to the the Middle Eastern region. We know that they they are great projection platform for us. We understand that. However... we also are a very strong nation when it comes to human rights when it comes to the rule of law. And if there are indicators that the Prince was involved in this murder then we need to absolutely consider further action."

Ernst, who was recently elected the vice chairwoman of the Senate Republican Conference, was also asked about how the Republican Party can better reach out to women voters. She said the party must better communicate how its policy positions benefit women, like tax cuts and deregulation.

"We need to be better about communicating all of the great things that we are doing and then encourage those women to run for elected office," she said.

"WE"? Who are "WE"?

Has there been a meeting and group consensus?

Simply because she’s a Republican doesn’t necessarily mean she’s on the side of American citizens. If she were a Democrat, you could have no doubt she’s not on our side.

I think she means “open for normal and legal trade” rather than open in the Obama sense of porous to border-jumpers.

Ernst is up for reelection in two years. She believes she needs to position herself in a way that portrays her as not being a lap dog to Trump. I think it is a stupid strategy however two years is a long time.

Sadly, Joni Ernst chose to remain a Mitt Romney acolyte after she had the chance to walk away. A big, big disappointment.

Invite them to live in your own private house at our expense.

There are plenty of illegals already present in the US to do that for.

Meanwhile, next door, we have Sasse the Ass. Another lying sack of crap who passed himself off as a conservative who would follow the will of the people who elected him.

I am all for the asylum seekers. I,for one, am an asylum seeker. I seek to have all the long-shuttered insane asylums filled with the local, state and federal elected officials who do everything they can to keep the flow of illegals unabated.

The dirty little secret of the border that the MSM hides is that there is a massive amount of cross traffic daily. In AZ, TX, CA, NM every day thousands of trucks and tens of thousands of vehicles and people. Kids live in Mexico and go to school in the US and cross into the US every morning.

This gives Trump massive leverage over the Chamber of Commerce phonies like those who run AZ.

Oh, Joni. Aren’t you cute?! Why don’t we take an ice cream truck down there and hand out all the popsicles they want?!
Why not give each invader a free puppy and a hug?!

I posted this the other day:

I think an unspoken reason that both sides want open immigration is that they desperately need a new tax base to replace the boomers who are quickly transitioning from payors to payees in social security, Medicare, and other government services.

Millennials, GenXYZ, and everyone else can't replace the loss of the boomers in the workforce, and politicians are panicking over the collapse of these systems on their watch after all their promises, and the impact it will have on their future fortunes.
