Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), who is expected to become chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in January, said Sunday that his Republican counterparts on the panel won't have subpoena rights.
Cummings, who hasn't had subpoena power while serving as ranking minority member on the committee, added Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" that he plans to work with Republicans.
"It’s our opportunity. I will consult with them, I will work with them — unlike they did with me — but no," he said of giving Republicans subpoena power.
He added, however, that he's hoping Democrats and Republicans can "return to a level of civility" in the next Congress.
"I hope that we can have leadership that just doesn’t move to common ground, but move to higher ground," he said.
Cummings also said that he plans to issue subpoenas in investigations that go to "the very heart of our democracy," though he added that he won't use them excessively.
He said he will subpoena Trump administration officials and investigate areas other than the White House, such as the pharmaceutical industry.
"The subpoenas that I want to issue would be much different than ones I have seen. I want to issue subpoenas that go to the very heart of our democracy and protecting that democracy," he said.
Democracy dies when Democrats are in control.

If we would investigate, prosecute and prevent election fraud... people like Cummings would not have this kind of power to abuse.

If we have learned anything from the circus sideshows that are senate subcommittee hearings, it is that they are toothless. The most appropriate response to a Cummings subpoena is a hearty “FU”

If the Democrats actually do what they said they would do if they took the house, it will wreck all the progress folks have made in reducing taxes, record unemployment, and consumer confidence. I wonder who they will blame for that in the 2020 elections.
The few Republicans running for House seats who focused on immigration kept their house seats. Those that (listened to DC masterminds) and worried about “Health Care and anything but backing Trump or immigration” didn’t.

Cummings is among the vilest within the Congressional Black Caucus - and that's saying something about that group. I remember watching the House panel hearings about the IRS/ Lois Lerner/ TEA Party back ~ 2012 on C-SPAN. Cummings revealed his true ugly character during that charade. Yes, House hearings are worthless. I haven't watched C-SPAN since.
The Repbulicans on that Commmittee better kill Cummings with daily leaks. Obliterate him. Democrats will only respond to that. They don’t do reason or negotiation.
