Mayor of Mexico’s (City of) Guanajuato slams low-spending tourists
AP News ^ | 22 November 2018

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The mayor of Mexico’s quaint colonial city of Guanajuato has taken a drubbing after he criticized low-spending tourists, saying, “We want the type of visitor who spends more.” Mayor Alejandro Navarro said this week that tourists from nearby Mexican cities often arrive in cheap bus tour packages, bringing their own food. He blamed them for creating trash and traffic problems.

Social media users quickly mocked Navarro, posting fake road signs reading “Welcome to Guanajuato, no food or beverage allowed.” By Wednesday, Navarro was forced to post a taped apology on his Twitter account, saying, “Everyone is welcome ... it is not my intention to offend anyone.” The old colonial mining town is known for its narrow, twisting streets, imposing stone buildings and a yearly arts festival.

This is MAJOR news in Mexico. He has insulted all of the masses who regularly visit Guanajuato as not being good enough to come and visit the town. There is a MAJOR eruption on social media and all I can find is the TINY story by AP news.

This Mayor Alejandro Navarro epitomizes the attitude of Mexico's elite towards its own poor people. This Mayor of Guanajuato has insulted the vast majority of Mexicans in his own country by only wanting high-spending tourists to come to Guanajuato. This is HUGE news in Mexico about this ugly discrimination against the poor. Yet, Mexico wants US to accept all of their poor and say nothing about how they don't contribute to OUR society and only cause problems.

This is the essence of proof of the hypocrisy of the ruling elites in Mexico toward the immigration problem. They don't want their own poor causing them problems at home. They want them to come here, make money, send it back and later become a problem for us HERE. Trump needs to jump on this.

Guilty as charged.

I spent 2-3 nights in Guanajuato with my son about 10 years ago. We lived well, best hotels, restaurants, etc.

But it still was a cheap couple of days.

Go there if you can. A magical city.

I don't blame him for complaining about something petty like this, the alternative is to complain about drug cartel murders and then get real dead.

Here is an outstanding video of news service making complete fun of this guy. I don't have time to translate right now. It is screaming hilarious:

If you could understand Spanish, you would be crying at how funny their mockery is of Alejandro Navarro.

Could send a horde of Hondurans to your town.

Heard they were big spenders.

Or was that offenders?

It's a 3D or 4D city

Totally worth making the effort to go there. It's the birthplace of Mexican independence. I stayed in an hotel on the park in lower right.

The Mexicans think about Guanajuato the way we think about Valley Forge or Plymouth Rock.

The mayor doesn’t want folks going there who are going to spend a fortune. My wife is upset about his comments and she rarely gets upset about any of this mess, ever.

“Guanajuato”

Southeast of Leon. North of Mexico City.

I don't know if the problem is the same in Mexico as it is in the Caribbean. I just came back from a two-week Caribbean cruise. I'd intended to buy some things at the island stops, but why? Almost all of the goods were "made in India" or "made in China" with the name of the Island printed on it. Anything nice was what I could get in the US, and not priced any better. Cuisine? Except for some rum drinks, not much locally produced or native foods were available. Net purchases....native passion fruit juice and a nip of Curacao rum and some bananas in Curacao. A dish of ice cream in St Martaan's

Actually, they did me a favor. That was a grand total of $12 spent!

Seems like a very nice city that has kept its older areas of the city nicely preserved.
