Trump: Mississippi senator’s ‘hanging’ remark was ‘in jest’

President Donald Trump is defending a Republican U.S. senator from Mississippi who praised one of her own supporters by saying she would attend a “public hanging” if the supporter invited her — a remark that has stirred strong emotions in a state with a history of racially motivated lynchings.

Trump said at the White House on Tuesday that Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith is “a tremendous woman” who loves the people of Mississippi and the U.S.

A video published Nov. 11 shows Hyde-Smith praising a supporter in Tupelo by saying: “If he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row.” She said in a statement that the expression was an “exaggerated expression of regard” and said it is “ridiculous” to read any negative connotation into it, but she has refused to answer questions about it.

Walmart asked Hyde-Smith to return a $2,000 campaign contribution because of the hanging remark.

“It was just sort of said in jest,” Trump said, defending Hyde-Smith. “She’s a tremendous woman and it’s a shame that she has to go through this.”

Hyde-Smith’s campaign did not respond to questions from The Associated Press about whether it would refund Walmart’s contribution. Campaign spokeswoman Melissa Scallan said the senator was focusing on debate preparation.

(snip) -- Bishop Ronnie Crudup, senior pastor of predominantly black New Horizon Church International in Jackson, said Hyde-Smith’s hanging remark was “highly offensive.”

“That statement has historical context to it, and it shows that she doesn’t really know black people,” said Crudup, who is supporting Espy. “This is something that has everybody in an uproar because, in 2018, you want to think that we’re beyond this. And probably for most of my folks, too, what makes it worse is not to apologize about it.”

I spent many years in that area including a town that, in the late 70’s, it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility that the klan might be on street corners on a weekend trying to collect some money. In full regalia. Sort of like the “boot collection” volunteer fireman would do. Yeah, it would make the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

If she had Trump’s intestinal fortitude she would say something like “A public hanging is very different than what Democrats did with the KKK and lynchings. The former was carrying out a legal sentencing, the latter was Democrats upset that we freed the slaves”. Or something like that.

A Repub Senator makes a comment and is vilified in the media. A Dem rep says he wants to nuke anyone who doesn't hand over their guns and the media sound like crickets. Sound familiar? I'm at the point where I really don't care anymore and just enjoy seeing the Left go apoplectic... ----------

_______________

You're quite right about the media! It is the most damaging factor in our nation........ that and the schools.

This country is decayed and turning blue.......... FAST.

I'm 72 years old in January, and I feel really bad for the few good younger people who will try to live in this infected, dying country.

While famed English hangman James Berry might have invented it, it was the American west which perfected the art of hanging by calculating exactly the right drop and positioning the hangman's knot behind the left ear.

By making those executions public, it had a powerful deterrent effect. It was also the GOP which promoted the anti-lynching laws in America. Big difference between a just judicial hanging (public or otherwise) and a dirty lynching.

This twisting of words and meanings is getting old.

A public hanging is the carrying out of a court sentence upon a criminal no matter their skin color.

A lynching is entirely different and was usually done to Southern blacks by democrats dressed in their bed sheets.

She needs to win over Chris McDaniel’s supporters, and that means she has to let them know she hates blacks, too.

“Bishop Ronnie Crudup”

Astute people will remember him from the McDaniel/Cochran primary election from ‘14.

With candidates like this, no wonder we have 52-53 senators, instead of 60+.

“Is this woman an idiot?”

I don’t know honestly if she is or not, but what I do know is that what she said is an old saying, I know that if you relate hangings to blacks you’re the racist, and I know that people who are jumping on her about this innocuous statement are falling lock step into the main stream media’s tactics of demonizing every republican candidate, just like so many did with Roy Moore. It’s very discouraging to see this on FR.

Another “my turn” cardboard cut-out the GOPe expects people to be motivated to vote for!

I hope she can stumble her way into office!

Here is what she said:

“If he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row.”

How can that possibly be related to lynchings? Lynchings by definition are not public. Public hangings were capital punishment, no matter what you’re race. Were all people hanged black? By the way, I am “down here”, and this whole controversy is nothing bu typical MSM BS directed at a Republican candidate. It’s a shame people eat this stuff up.

I never thought of a public hanging is something to do with lynching black people I always thought of it as just what you said it like old frontier Justice that’s when public hangings occurred.

Of course it was in jest. And I am SICK of Republicans playing along with the Demon Rat party and media (redundant) to act like these types of remarks are damnable.

These moments would be a good opportunity to take on political correctness. Instead, people who make offhand remarks or jokes bend over backward to apologize. I remember an incident years ago, I think it was in Colorado. There was some kind of townhall meeting going on, and the lights kept going out. The mayor said something like "you guys had better get this fixed; the natives are getting restless!". The phrase "the natives are getting restless" used to be a common expression. The mayor was then vilified for somehow having made a racial slur, and he later apologized profusely.

IMO, he should not have apologized, but should have doubled down. He should have said something like "the only people who thought my remark was racist are politically correct morons! It was a common figure of speech before the speech police started finding racism in everything! Get over it!"

....... well said.

However, the MEDIA, being the lying scumbags that they are, would misrepresent that excellent explanation of yours .... so that most of the voters would KNOW NOTHING of those intelligent words.

This nation is near dead. Too many stupid people and too much evil CORRUPTION IN THE MEDIA.

Good luck with that, look at all the whimps on this thread. “Oh no, shes a moron, how could she say that” meanwhile Democrat candidate can beat women or threaten nuke people who don’t want gun control and still get voted into office or ignored by the media.
Do us a favor you hand wringers in this thread, go put on your pussy hat and go join another forum, because we don’t need you on the side of the media..
