President Donald Trump is defending a Republican U.S. senator from Mississippi who praised one of her own supporters by saying she would attend a public hanging if the supporter invited her a remark that has stirred strong emotions in a state with a history of racially motivated lynchings.
Trump said at the White House on Tuesday that Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith is a tremendous woman who loves the people of Mississippi and the U.S.
A video published Nov. 11 shows Hyde-Smith praising a supporter in Tupelo by saying: If he invited me to a public hanging, Id be on the front row. She said in a statement that the expression was an exaggerated expression of regard and said it is ridiculous to read any negative connotation into it, but she has refused to answer questions about it.
Walmart asked Hyde-Smith to return a $2,000 campaign contribution because of the hanging remark.
It was just sort of said in jest, Trump said, defending Hyde-Smith. Shes a tremendous woman and its a shame that she has to go through this.
Hyde-Smiths campaign did not respond to questions from The Associated Press about whether it would refund Walmarts contribution. Campaign spokeswoman Melissa Scallan said the senator was focusing on debate preparation.
(snip) -- Bishop Ronnie Crudup, senior pastor of predominantly black New Horizon Church International in Jackson, said Hyde-Smiths hanging remark was highly offensive.
That statement has historical context to it, and it shows that she doesnt really know black people, said Crudup, who is supporting Espy. This is something that has everybody in an uproar because, in 2018, you want to think that were beyond this. And probably for most of my folks, too, what makes it worse is not to apologize about it.

Maybe she was talking about Christmas tree ornaments on a tree in the town square. That would be my guess.
Get over it. I’m sick of this cr*p.
When some idiot progressive/liberal/ergo stupid person of ANY color demonstrates that they do not deserve respect, they won’t get it.
The President gave her the thumbs up, so...
I’ll accept it that she didn’t mean anything by it and will do Mississippi a solid if given the chance.
There is a difference between racial lynchings and frontier-justice public hangings. She should clarify.
A public hanging and a lynching are two different things. A public hanging is an execution of a convicted person by the state for heinous crimes. A lynching is an illegal and violent criminal act, typically done in the dead of night and quietly with few witnesses. The tool used is the same, the method, setting, and the purpose are all very different.
It does not matter what she says or does, the fix is in. The Dem candidate is a Clinton crony and black, so if you dont vote for him you are a racist. Mississippians had better be prepared for all the fraudulent votes coming in from surrounding states....the Dems really need this seat (but so do we!!) Watch out for the busses bringing voters from all the surrounding areas!
She mentioned capital punishment, and all the Democrats are like — “Don’t talk about black people that way!”
And we’re the racists?
No, not a moron. She needs to win over Chris McDaniel’s supporters, and that means she has to let them know she hates blacks, too.
I'm at the point where I really don't care anymore and just enjoy seeing the Left go apoplectic...
What is with GOP candidates starting campaigns with a stupid comment. DeSantos almost sunk himself with the money remark. Meanwhile the Rats get away with murder.
Of course it was in jest. And I am SICK of Republicans playing along with the Demon Rat party and media (redundant) to act like these types of remarks are damnable.
Hanging at Rev. Wright’s America hating church for 20 years, yeah, that might be a problem. Enjoying company for decades with woman abusers and enablers might be an issue. Creating a permanent underclass via the welfare state or supporting central control of the economic levers is troublesome.
Making a joke is not.
Sure this is an unforced error but not a fatal one. Trump will rally with people in a state that has no early voting no same day registration and a photo ID requirement. I like our chances. Especially since Trump can now brag about a new factory coming to Mississippi and a federal judge has just struck down the state’s anti-abortion law after 15 weeks.

She should have been only talking about capital punishment, if anything.
She's a dolt. What a surprise. /s
Ill accept it that she didnt mean anything by it and will do Mississippi a solid if given the chance."

You're a very understanding old fella, sir.
No, it is her age and where she grew up. Use of irony. Southern expressions, cultural habit force.
You would have thought that she called for partial-birth abortions. Wait, that is okay.
Or, now, female genital mutilation.
Or, disrespecting the flag.
And were the racists? ---

As Alas Babylon! said (I think) "I think it would have been enough to say you stood by the death penalty when warranted and you are a strong opponent of criminality."
Sounds like it. Rightly or wrongly, there's a huge amount of sensitivity about hangings and the history of lynching. It doesn't play well down there. She should be smart enough to understand that.

We can’t set impossible standards for our side and then cut and run whenever our candidates are unjustly attacked. We have to do like the Democrats do — double down, stick together, and cut another check.
There are ways to say this without being capable of so easily flipping it to a racial allegation. The reality is that there have been many more whites hanged in public, then there were blacks. But the perception of a hanging is always going to conjure up the image of a black being hung for merely being black, especially in this day & age.
