NBC host Chuck Todd on Tuesday criticized the White House's new rules for reporters at presidential news conferences, calling them "absurd" and predicting that journalists won't follow them.
"These aren’t exactly pro first amendment rules. I assume there isn’t a single serious journalist in the WH press corps who would abide by these absurd 'rules.' Manners is one thing, but regulating follow ups is a form of censorship," he wrote in a tweet.
The White House announced the new rules on Monday after restoring the press credential of CNN reporter Jim Acosta. It had been revoked last week after he refused to give up the microphone earlier this month while attempting to ask Trump a question about the Russia investigation.
The new rules include limiting journalists to asking one question and allowing follow-up questions only at the discretion of Trump or other White House officials answering questions.
In response, the president of the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) said in a statement Monday that the WHCA expects reporters to continue asking follow-up questions.
"The White House Correspondents' Association had no role in crafting any procedures for future press conferences. For as long as there have been White House press conferences, White House reporters have asked follow-up questions," WCHA President Olivier Knox said. "We fully expect this tradition will continue."

Chuck Todd is not a member of the WH press corps as far as I know.
I say limit it to ten minutes...lock the doors...chain each journalist’s left wrist to another journalist, give each a Bowie Knife for their right hand, and begin the press conference.
Begin cameras.
Record journalists desperate to make a name for themselves (rather than reporting news).

Well, the President doesn’t have to hold any press conferences. Obama didn’t hold many. The President isn’t obligated to talk to anyone about what he is doing other than Congress.
There are written rules now only because a judge required them after crybaby Acosta complained. The rules are nothing more than common sense and common courtesy. My preschool grandchildren follow similar rules: You speak respectfully; ou wait to speak until you’re called on; when someone else is called on, you are quiet.

I have never understood why reporters get to ask “follow-ups”.
One question only is about the most common parameter for a press conference that can be found—with any follow-up questions at the discretion of the speaker at the presser.
All the WH rules do is impose that low bar of press conference order.
They loved it much more with Obama, when they had to submit their questions in writing, in advance of the briefing.
Just ban TV from coverage.
These narcissists will be looking for another gig ASAP.

A follow up question that is actually a follow up on the original question is perfectly acceptable. A “follow up” that is completely unrelated to the original question is not acceptable. Simple.
This has nothing do with the First Amendment, since they can shut the White House and refuse press access.
It allows them to criticize or ridicule the answer. They ask a setup question, knowing the response, then attack with a pre-planned "follow-up question". If they ask well thought out questions, there is rarely reason to follow up.
Right On! Disrespect them as you ban them.
