How Mitt Romney could take down Trump: Become the Republican Ralph Nader
The Boston Globe ^ | November 15, 2018 | Nestor Ramos

No, even though the votes from last week aren’t even all counted yet, it is, of course, time to move on to the next election. And while the discussion so far has focused on which Democrats are running and who among them is best positioned to defeat President Trump, I’ve got the perfect candidate to dethrone the Donald.

It’s Mitt Romney.

Or maybe Jeff Flake. Ben Sasse? Sure, whatever. Any of them will do.

Because I’m not suggesting that any of these vocal Trump critics from within the president’s own party — including Massachusetts’ re-gift to Utah — run as a Democrat. I don’t even want them to take on the president in a primary. We already saw how that ends.

Instead, I’m asking only that one of these allegedly responsible Republicans — each of whom has unleashed hell upon Trump in the form of a sternly worded speech/tweet/press release/raised eyebrow — run as a third-party candidate. It’s time for one of these supposed independent thinkers who just can’t abide Trump’s dangerous rhetoric to put their considerable monies where their mouths are.

Romney has referred to the president a “con man” and a “fraud.” Flake, an outgoing senator from Arizona, has decried “the coarseness of our leadership.” And Sasse, a Republican senator from Nebraska, has said he thinks about leaving the party every day because of Trump.

That all sounds great, guys, truly. But if you want to earn brownie points for standing up to Trump, you’re going to have to do more than talk and tweet about it.

You’re going to have to Nader the guy.

Sure, Mittens just aches to be known and remembered as a spoiler GOP fringe candidate who wanted Trump to be replaced with a liberal Democrat. If Mittens ever doubts that is his destiny, he can always call Jeb Bush and Jeff Flake for encouragement, and MSNBC can be counted on to slobber all over him.

Mitt Romney could not even take down Barack Hussein Obama or, CNN’s Candy Crowley...who dumped all over him in a 2012 POTUS debate!!!

Facts: Romney, McCain...”WEAK SISTERS”!!!

Romney still wants to become president and sees his opportunity again in 2024. Causing the GOP to lose the WH in 2020 would destroy his political future and cause him to lose his next primary.

Sasse is on the ballot again in 2020. He’d look like the biggest sore loser of all time if he ran for president fresh off a primary loss. If he wins his primary and Nebraska laws allow him, would he run for Senate as a Republican and and president as an independent? He’d lose both.

Flake might run since he has nothing left to lose. Kasish is probably a greater likelihood since he doesn’t have the humiliation of getting chased out of his primary. It could backfire on the Democrats however, since they’ll probably run on abolishing ICE and the entire communist agenda. There will be a lot of left-leaning Trump haters who can’t bring themselves to vote for a Marxist.

Because the Left is still butthurt that Ralph Nader ran in 2000 and siphoned votes from Al Gore Junior.

Ralphie didn’t even get as many votes (2,883,443) as Ross Pee-rot (19,743,821 and 8,085,402).

Interesting side note, the same Green Party ticket (president-veep) ran in 1996 (and only got 685,435 votes)

You thought these morons were having a hard time accepting 2016...

They still can’t get over 2000!

You see, the only reason Algore lost in 2000 is because Ralph Nader siphoned off Democrat votes. Ralph Nader should never have been on the ballot, and all of those Nader votes were the legal property of the Democrat Party, and should have been given to Algore in the recount (along with all the votes for Pat Buchanan).

Nader pretty likely did pull enough Democrat votes in Florida in 2000 to make a difference.

That’s the point. And our side would do well not to dismiss it as a potential Never Trump/uniparty strategy in 2020. Best to take seriously and prepare counters for potential threats.

Mitt Romney has only had a few brushes with PDJT.

I can hardly wait until Mittens experiences the full measure of PDJTs chopping/grinding machine.

Into the hopper Mittens, you’ll be wiser after.

What he is suggesting is that a “moderate” running 3rd party could draw enough Republican votes to ensure the Dem candidate for President would win.

The way Perot helped Clinton to win?

Why don't third party candidates ever throw elections of Democrats? Why is it only elections of Republicans that are thwarted in this manner? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

If it weren't a dozen nails in our coffin, it would be fun to watch the leftists twist Prez Mitt into a pretzel. He would be Obama 2+ when they were done with him.

Someone tell Hekter that Nader hurt Gore in 2000, and that Bishop Dullard would hurt Biden in 2020.

Romney would take more votes from the left if he ran third party.

I doubt either of you really believe that. If Romney/Kasich/Flake/Sasse runs as an independent in the 2020 presidential election, and President Trump loses by a small margin, everyone here will claim the backstabbing GOP establishment conspired with the Democrats and cost Trump the election because the uniparty preferred Biden as President over him. No one would stick to the “Romney/Kasich/Flake hurt Biden more” line in that scenario.
