My sister and I are nurses who are disabled by life-shortening diseases. As a result, we know from first-hand experience about both the limits of modern medicine at life's end and the challenges of living with disabling medical conditions.
I'm 61 and have suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for 30 years. It has invaded my lung tissue and requires me to wear an oxygen tank most of the day to breathe. I've had 18 surgeries. I plan to fight my illness for as long as I can. I enjoy life. But at the end stage of my disease, I do not want to suffer through air hunger in the very last days of my life.
My younger sister, Melissa, suffers from small cell lung cancer, the most deadly of all lung cancers. She has two small, small grandchildren that she loves beyond measure.
Neither of us wants to die, but we know we are going to die long before the end of our natural lives. When that time is imminent, and if our suffering becomes unbearable, we both would like to have the opportunity to die in our own way, at home, with our family and friends around us.
That's why we recently recorded a video for Compassion & Choices urging the New Jersey Assembly and Senate to pass the Aid in Dying for Terminally Ill Act (A1504/S1072) before the end of year.

Death with Dignity and euthanasia are both euphemisms for doctor-assisted murder. And I don't know from where the term "Death with Dignity" comes. If I die on a hospital bed with cancer or I die on a hospital bed with drugs that will kill me when I decide to die. How is one more dignified than the other?
Me neither.
But when I die should be Gods business and mine - not yours.
So-called compassionate goobers can butt out.
When any of us die IS Gods business. Not yours. Not mine. Murder and suicide are still wrong.
What should government’s role be?
If you want to off yourself there are a million ways to do it, especially if you’re a nurse, but don’t drag other people into it.
How about that ... New Jersey has just figured out a way to deal with its public pension crisis.
Oh I agree.
I am a libertarian when it comes to sex and matters of life and death and each of gets to decide whats appropriate for us as individuals.
I dont want the government or third party nannies making those decisions.
Well who’s stopping these women? If you want to off yourself, no one can stop you.
Government should incarcerate and silence those who advocate for euthanasia, and should execute those who carry it out.
That is true but bear in mind that over the past 50 years or so, medical science has made it possible to keep people alive (barely) by machines years beyond where they would otherwise have expired naturally. This technology will only improve, to the point where it might be possible to keep people alive for decades with machines after their bodies have effectively shut down.
..”Well whos stopping these women? If you want to off yourself, no one can stop you”...
Exactly..why all the drama? There’s plenty of ways to do that without the fanfare.
If you really are terminally ill, you ought to be able to live out your days in comfort and dignity.
I am absolutely opposed to euthanasia and assisted suicide.
I disagree, how can we call ourselves small government Conservatives yet be in favor of the government forbidding individuals who are going to die a miserable death from ending their life with medical assistance?
Exactly..why all the drama? Theres plenty of ways to do that without the fanfare.

Yep. And government doesn’t need to be involved.
Obviously you are not a conservative supporter of the constitution!
Yup.
I am against measures to artificially hasten death. But when God calls us home, no use in delaying the inevitable.
I am absolutely opposed to euthanasia and assisted suicide.

So am I. But if they want to do it, they’re probably smart enough to pull it off without an assist. It’s their life. It’s their decision. No one can stop them if they’re committed to it.
She said.......”we both would like to have the opportunity to die in our own way, at home, with our family and friends around us”....
How about you leave your friends and family out of your death wish and just do it without the audience. These things are usually long suffering on family members and friends while you wade through the hours til your ‘due date’.
Just do it and leave it at that.
The murder of babies not yet born SHOULD be against the law. That it isn't, is a grave failing of these United States.
There is more dignity in fighting fir life. Of course if you signed the DNR and your turn comes, that’s all folks.
The concern is not so much for those people who want to go faster than hell; it’s fear of a system that would decide someone who could have a little more life will get no choice.
