Gov. Phil Murphy responds to criticism over winter storm response in New Jersey

) -- Commuters across New Jersey faced a slow ride to work one day after a blast of snow and sleet brought traffic to a stop and led to a wave of criticism of Gov. Phil Murphy.

Murphy held a briefing in Woodbridge Friday morning to address the concerns. He was flanked by members of his administration who led the state's response to the storm.

"I can understand and appreciate entirely and completely the frustration that I am hearing, and our team is hearing from commuters," Murphy said. "Every storm gives us a test. This is not the first, by a mile, but it gives us the chance to review responses and make adjustments for the next one."

On Thursday, Murphy, a Democrat, tweeted that the storm was worse than forecast, but commuters weren't buying that.

During my commute, some of the stopped motorists had to get out and pee. In that situation, when you are spending hours in total gridlock, what should the protocol be when nature calls?

Uric acid snow melt!

Get out and do your duty on/near the first DIM/LIB/RINO politician you find. Would that be appropriate?

Passenger side front, next to car, open both doors if you have a 4 door, in the V of the front. Let fly.

As you note, they knew they were going to get snow, as of Monday. They initially thought an inch or so. That means that the salt spreaders should have been preparing the roadway Thursday afternoon, regardless. The plow crews should have been told to stand by, regardless.

I despise Murphy but I'm sort of wondering why everyone is so quick to criticize him. If the governor was supposed to be prepared for the storm, then why weren't the commuters and the school districts? I was the last one to leave my office building last evening; everyone else was gone by 2:00 PM, and I figured I'd wait out the mad rush.

I was shocked to see so many motorists still on the road almost four hours later.

I have an extended cab pickup truck that serves as a mobile outhouse. Pull over to the shoulder, get out, go around to the passenger side, open the two doors (the passenger door opens the normal way; the rear door opens in reverse), and do your business right there on the ground. You can even partially close the two doors around you for extra privacy.

Just make sure you don't pee on your shoes or on the step bar under the door of the truck. LOL.

My town had the kids home by 1pm. Snow started 2ish.

My work turned everyone loose at 3pm. It should have been 2 hours earlier.

Murphy should take the heat. He appoints the people to run the state snow removal. Whoever that person is doesn’t know how to prepare. In previous storms, you’d see lines of plow trucks sitting on the major highways before the storm. Someone didn’t think that was necessary, or didn’t want to pay the overtime. They started salting too late. They didn’t have enough trucks out.

Once enough cars were on the road, the trucks are useless since they can’t clear.

They have one job and that job, year after year is to have the people and resources to take care of the roads in inclement weather. How hard is that?

in the past media hyped a storm days ahead. The other year the storm that ended up 20 miles west of NYc.

THe morning was still an advisory which at noon changed to warning.
Media missed chance to scare people into staying home.
What did Ch 2, 4, 5 7 11 say yesterday morning?

Based on the past winters If Sean Hannity heard there was a big storm he would have had Joe Bastardi on the day before.

I agree with you. I’m just saying that the biggest problem I encountered yesterday was the endless array of idiots in vehicles that had no business on the road in that kind of weather. I will have nightmares of Ford Mustangs and contractor vans spinning their tires in the snow for days. LOL.

I remember that hype storm from a few years ago. The issue there was the storm did bury someone...Long Island. If it is anemic in Manhattan and northern NJ it’s a bust.

That said, the HRRR model had that storm pegged. HRRR is a very short term model and if you are within 12 hours, it gets right or so close to right as to not matter.

As the broadcasters were standing out by the streetlamps waiting for the snow, the HRRR was accurately showing that nothing was coming. It was comical to me to watch.

Wednesday night we were expecting around an inch of snow on Thursday, changing over to rain by mid-day. We got about 4" before the rain started in the late afternoon.

Fortunately, they closed most of the schools down here for the day - no sense of having kids/buses out while the snow was falling.

Even the roads that were pre-treated saw accidents. Semis off road, cars and trucks into guardrails. Horrendous conditions.

The good news is the snow here has totally melted.

I thought Bastardi was calling for some snow this week right down into the cities, just not a huge snow fall, before changing over to rain and or sleet. Seems pretty close to what happened since he was hawking a storm since mid last week.
