All adults should be screened for unhealthy alcohol use, new guidelines say
CNN ^ | Nov. 13, 2018 | Susan Scutti

You can expect a "drinking checkup" when you visit the doctor. All adults, including pregnant women, should be screened for unhealthy alcohol use by their primary care physicians, the United States Preventive Services Task Force advises. For those patients who drink above the recommended limits, doctors should provide brief counseling to help them reduce their drinking, according to the new task force statement published Tuesday in the medical journal JAMA.

As far as teens, the independent panel of medical experts came up empty. The task force said it did not find enough evidence to make a recommendation for or against alcohol screening and counseling for those under the age of 18. The panel is calling for more research.

Unhealthy alcohol use means drinking beyond the recommended limits. No more than four drinks in a single day and 14 drinks in a week is the line drawn for men age 21 to 64, according to National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. For women and older men, the institute advises no more than three drinks in one day and no more than seven drinks in a week. There is no safe level of alcohol for pregnant women, according to the institute.

I can save us all some time. Doc, don't bother asking me if or how much I drink - I'm an adult I'll make my own determinations on that. Also don't bother asking me if there are firearms in my home. None of your business, nor anyone else's business.

Anything you say to a healthcare "professional" will go on the record and may come back to bite you. I don't volunteer anything. If there is something going on with my body I don't understand or I can't handle then and only then will I ask for help/advice.

Invade every adult’s privacy, but it’s not a problem if they’re under 18...their formative years. Great.

Some of the biggest booze bags I have ever met have been medical doctors.

I have met these people by the score at the dinner parties, cocktail parties etc. hosted by two friends. The wife is an MD and can put it away as well as the men.

Can’t I just declare myself to be here illegally and get all my goodies? After all, it would be racist to screen illegal immigrants for substance abuse.

“Plus, I don’t drink at all. “

It is everyone’s personal choice.

But I have read that some/moderate alcohol consumption is good for you, it prevents blood clotting, i.e. strokes and heart attacks — in moderation only of course. Too much is harmful, but a little is good.

But if someone can’t keep it in moderation, than not drinking at all is probably better.

I know people who don’t have any problems either way, but choose not to drink, which is fine, of course.

But it should be a personal choice, not the government forcing you.

LaCarre is boring, but that is the way it is, punctuated with Hoohaw at the Horse and Cow.

Let us never speak of it again...

In BC the “legal” limit for criminal charge is still 0.08, but blowing a 0.05 will get you a 72 hour suspension and your car towed. Then there is around $700 in fines etc.

If you blow that same 0.05 again within 5 years, it’s an automatic 6 month suspension, one month car impounded, and the $800. MADD course. Plus another several hundred to $2000 in fines, fees, etc.

Oh, they put a breathalyzer in your car for the next 6 months after buying your license back, and you get to pay a couple hundred dollars to install and rent a $100/month machine that demands you blow every time you start the car, and every 10-25 minutes the car is running.

You get to come in at their convenience to get said machine recalibrated every so often at your expense, too.

This is for an “administrative” offense, BTW.

The solution to unhealthy alcohol use, of course, is to switch to one of these healthy (doctor) brands...

Having worked in a big city ER for years I can guarantee that alcohol is a huge, huge,*huge* problem in this country.I wasn't there long before I decided to 1) stop drinking *completely* and 2) to *always* buckle my seat belt (this was before it was the law in my state).

IMO the smartest people are the ones who can learn from the mistakes of *others*.
