Ocasio-Cortez finds Amazon’s HQ2 in NYC ‘extremely concerning’

Queens residents are “outraged” at Amazon’s plans to build part of its second headquarters in Long Island City, according to Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The Democratic Socialist, who cruised to victory in the midterm elections after beating Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens) in an upset primary win in June, fired off a series of tweets Monday night into Tuesday regarding the blockbuster plans.

“We’ve been getting calls and outreach from Queens residents all day about this. The community’s response? Outrage,” Ocasio-Cortez, who officially takes office in January, tweeted.

The 29-year-old went on to say: “Amazon is a billion-dollar company. The idea that it will receive hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks at a time when our subway is crumbling and our communities need MORE investment, not less, is extremely concerning to residents here.”

Libs call it gentrification. Residential and business spaces come to life, raising values. This puts exit pressure on low income families.

Collectivists love community decline. It keeps dependents where they belong.

Someone needs to start a daily YouTube channel of this idiot’s House mini-speeches, kind of like we had for Jim Traficant. I can’t wait to see what utter idiocy comes out of that bug-eyed, leftist moron.

Basically this whole dog-and-pony show was all about how big a public subsidy Bezos could extort from some community.

Here in Pittsburgh local government has REFUSED to say what was offered. People have had to sue to try and get that disclosed.

In a true free-enterprise system companies would make it on their own without public subsidy. And in such a system Amazon would NEVER choose New York.

It will not suprise me if Amazon brings in foreign workers in such locations. Looks like FoxConn in Wisconsin will be doing that after they got the goodies.

I see no official announcement of that, not even in the Wall Street Journal 12 hours ago, all I see is speculation based upon anonymous insiders.

What she lacks in intelligence will be overridden by her liberal handler puppeteers. “Just say this sweetheart, and wear the expensive costumes we supply.” “The goal of socialism is communism.” Vladimir Lenin

What? You mean she can’t pass laws all by herself right now? Oh yeah, she’s not white. That’s reserved for the white congressmen. White privilege I’m sure.

Actually in this case I agree with Loopy. Amazin needs tax breaks the way I need to eat more pasta. Actually LIC is loaded with tax break monuments. Ride the LIRR from Woodside to the tunnel and it looks like an entire city is being built. Built for Wall Streeters, banker and finance millenials , Ad guys and Lawyers. As for jobs, the city is actually doing pretty well. It doesnt need to go in the tax crefit tank to attract jobs. Let alone gift Bezos when he really wants to be in NYC anyway. So yeah, I can agree with Loopy here.

Her constituents are dumb as rocks.

All she did was repeat their incoherent babble.

Bezos can buy her a fancy pad in Crystal City and that will be that.

In the UK, commercial property taxation is imposed at the national level.

The commercial property tax burden of a company is the same whether it locates in Grimsby (mainly Labour lovers) or Buckinghamshire (mainly Conservative).

"“We’ve been getting calls and outreach from Queens residents all day about this."
FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument

Although FDR’s state sovereignty-ignoring activist justices probably would have used an unreasonably wide interpretation of the Commerce Clause (1.8.3) to justify federal intervention in the affairs of a sovereign state, that clause doesn’t apply imo.

On the other hand, if the majority voters of Queens truly feel that their city government leaders are screwing city taxpayers with generous tax incentives for Amazon, then consider this. Ocasio-Cortez can possibly work with Congress to exercise its constitutional Article IV powers to make punitive laws to discourage city government leaders from ignoring voters.

"Article IV, Section 4: The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government [emphasis added], and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence."

So we’ve got to keep an eye on constitutionally low-information Orasio-Cortez to make sure that her remedy for the citizens who elected her does not unconstitutionally expand the powers of already unconstitutionally big federal government.

Corrections, insights welcome.

Amazon will rue the day they decided on the NYC area. These shrieking proglodytes will make their lives a living hell and tie them up in court for years as they try to acquire land, get permits, and start building. It will cost them twice as much as it would if they had picked Indianapolis, Nashville or somewhere else. Look what Obama is dealing with in Chicago with his own private monument. The neighborhood is tying them up in knots - and that’s where they supposedly love him.

Amazon has spent decades into Seattle. They are used to this treatment. They don’t mind apparently.
