Tuesday’s midterm elections weren’t a slam dunk for either party, not by anyone’s estimation. Democrats managed to avoid another apocalyptic election meltdown and keep their base from flipping out by flipping the House, if barely, and Republicans added slightly to their already slight majority in the Senate. We sent at least three Red State fake moderate Kavanaugh thumbs-downers packing and, even better, the GOP ‘squishy caucus’ ranks have been whittled down to Ben Sasse and his imaginary better angel. There’s still Collins and Murkowski, of course, but now President Trump’s judicial nominees aren’t depending on ‘good feelz’ from either to get confirmed. And that’s definitely a good feeling for conservatives.
Thankfully, as I wrote last Monday in my then-unwelcome (judging by a few of the comments which basically boiled down to ‘you’re an idiot’ and ‘kill yourself’) ‘silver lining’ prediction piece, all isn’t lost for Republicans or the Trump agenda. Not by a long shot.
But alas, Montana, none of this is thanks to you. That’s right, instead of helping further the agenda of the person you voted for at a 56 percent clip in 2016, you instead chose to send the massive, flannel-shirt wearing crew-cutted wonder, Democrat Jon Tester, back to the Senate for - wait for it - a THIRD term.
But the insanity doesn’t stop there, Montana. While you sent Tester back to us at a 50.1 percent clip - 246,291 votes to Republican Matt Rosendale’s 230,974 - you turned around and sent WWE wannabe Greg Gianforte, a Republican, to the U.S. House as your lone representative by a margin of 251,291 to the Democrat’s 226,251. So in other words, MORE Montanans voted for Gianforte than Tester and - the real kicker - upwards of 20,000 pulled the lever for Gianforte only to turn around and vote for the Democrat for U.S. Senate. Apparently, in Big Sky Country these days body slamming reporters is totally cool (and I’m not even judging, just making an observation - as a reporter), but saying ‘yes’ to President Trump’s judicial nominees and tax cut bills are a big ‘nah.’
What’s worse, an overwhelming percentage of Montana voters actually seem to have wanted change in Washington. “A clear majority, 76 percent of voters, did not approve of the job federal lawmakers were doing,” writes the Helena Independent Record. “But that same group of voters, by a significant margin, chose to send Tester back for a third term, deciding he was the best choice to improve the gridlock.”
No, there’s no excuse for this insanity, Montana, and if nobody else is going to tell you I will - You need to get your act together. It’s embarrassing. At least neighboring North Dakota had the good sense to chuck their dead weight. You, you sent all 300 pounds of it back to Washington for another six years.
In a political age as divided as ours is, every inch of territory must be retained at all costs. Liberals have the cities and they are making gains in the suburbs. They have the numbers and the promise of more should they succeed in their goal of bringing the entire Third World to our shores. What we have, for now, is Red states, and lots of them. And thanks to the wisdom of our founders each one of those Red states comes with two senators, two bulwarks against liberal tyranny. In the next several election cycles, the House and especially the Executive will be increasingly tougher for Republicans to win and hold, but with the Senate we have a chance. In this political age, there is NO EXCUSE whatsoever for a Red state to send a Democratic senator. None.
Jon Tester is probably a decent guy, and he isn’t the worst of the Democrats, not by a long shot. But he’s still a Democrat. Which means, like most, he’ll pretend to be ‘bipartisan’ on non-controversial issues like veterans care while stabbing President Trump in the back on tax cuts and judicial nominees. I mean, at least West Virginia’s Joe Manchin voted for Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. Jon Tester? He voted with Chuck Schumer like he usually does.
Montanans, you should have known better. You should have been better. Thankfully, there could be a bit of redemption coming in 2020, when you’ll have a chance to re-elect your lone GOP senator. But as far as 2018 is concerned, Montana, thanks for nothing!

PROVE THAT STATEMENT! I get really tired of Californians getting the blame for everything bad that happens elsewhere. Supposedly, it’s the Conservatives who are flocking out of California to get away from the RATs, so how do they magically become RAT Liberals in that transition? I call BS! The Liberals are quite happy here in CA where they control the whole show, so why is it that the problem in Montana gets shoved of on people who like where they are living and don’t want to leave?
We’re Conservative Californians, and we’ve thought about moving back to my wife’s home state of Nevada. But she won’t go back to Las Vegas, because it’s a $hit hole, and we are too old to put up with the relatively hard winters up north. Ditto going to any of the other “Western Red States” for the same reason. So enough of this red herring about how it’s transplanted Californians who are f*cking up places line Montana! We can move to our own mountains without the effort of moving all the way to Montana. It’s simply a divisive lie and you know it!
The Democrats left standing after the election are experts at this.

Tester lied about Dr. Randy Jackson, accusing him of being a drug pusher, defaming his excellent character. He is a typical Democrat lying politician. MT voters are dupes.

You’re right of course. Moderate Republicans in droves are finding they like living on the dole, the hell with the rest and their children and grand children. They want their subsidies and grave just like the libs, and so the vote ...

Well first of all think about this. You are 65 years old you have a house in California that is worth $1 million if you sell it. In Montana you could buy a house for $300,000 and have 700,000 left over to take vacations with, maybe even by a little cottage in Florida on the beach so you don’t have to spend your winters in the cold. Have a good retirement life a lot cheaper than you could if you stayed in California. That’s what they do. And they take their politics with them.
Also I personally know people from California who are very liberal who spent October and November this year registering college students to vote in Nevada for the Democrats and that could’ve happened in Bozeman and Missoula quite easily. The Democrats know how to organize people to do this. These friends also went to Ohio one year. They go where they are needed and they put their money where their mouth is. They look at it is their patriotic duty.
You’ve described West Virginia perfectly. Trump won the state by a 69%-26% margin — his largest in any state. And yet the place has more white people on welfare than even most European countries.

I live in Montana and know firsthand of many, too damn many, from California that have moved here after soiling their own nest. Then they vote for sidewalks and streetlights, and higher taxes to support them, trying to turn Montana into the ***thole they just left.

First of all I’m78 and my wife is 76. If we had moved when we were 65, it would have been a whole different story. We are in the process of selling a commercial property we have owned here in CA for the past 18 years It is a multi-million dollar transaction ( and we found out that although Capital Gains taxes are currently 15%, that only applies to transactions that are less than one million dollars! Over that amount, the rate “magically” jumps up to 20% together with a few other “fees” that the Federal Government “levies on the rich!” We also own two homes here, with a combined value of $4 million. But thanks to Prop 13, we have ultra low property taxes which erase that reason for moving. And if we were to sell out, we would end up giving both the State and Federal Government another ton of unearned income. Leaving our real property to our children, means that they will inherit it with NO TAXES paid to either entity. Owing to the mild climate, we also don’t suffer with sky high utility bills as would be the case in places like Montana.
Finally, we, like most people who have put down roots in a place they like to live out their lives, have come to love most of what California has to offer, even though a lit of what has kept us here has been sullied by the RAT government.
So we’re conservatives who have, at least for the present, elected to stay. Besides, the idea of a “little cottage in Florida,” a bigger $hit hole than CA isn’t on our list.
Montana was invaded by libtards who moved there after destroying California and New York. Wherever these cancerous tumors show up, there’s nothing but ruin and Jon Testers.

No, as a matter of fact we live on a private road on an acre and a half. Bad guess on your part. And FWIW, I used to go fishing out of Butte twenty years ago. Butte had more hippies than SF back then. So wanting sidewalks and street lights makes them Liberals? Give me a break. Jon Tester didn’t get re-elected by transplanted Californians, and you know it.
At this point Montana is made up of a few uber-Liberal college towns, surrounded by land owned by Ted Turner.

Tester defeated C. Burns who was the FIRST Republican Senator EVER reelected in state history.

I expect Daines will be easily reelected making him the second Republican Senator to ever be reelected.

It’s a pity there are so many FReepers who are very myopic about the great state of Montana.
Two out of three seats are in the hands of Republicans, that’s better than 0-3 which we have suffered may times!
That’s my thoughts exactly. The demo rats have ways and means.
