A poll worker is accused of refusing to let a military vet vote in Lake Forest.
Former Army veteran John Reader says an older man with a beard and a Hawaiian shirt told him a flag on his t-shirt was a “symbol of hatred” and was prohibited in a polling place.
“I was standing here waiting to vote, and a gentleman…said this flag was an item of protest and symbol of hatred,” Reader said. “I clearly explained it was an American flag, he said it’s not in color, I was not allowed to wear it.
“He wouldn’t let me vote unless I turned my shirt inside out, which I refused to do,” added Reader.
Witnesses say the man – only identified as “Bill” – accused Reader of supporting President Donald Trump

LMAO!!!! LOL LOL! I actually saw that movie in the theater with my parents when it first came out. That must have been around 1977 - 78 and it just utterly utterly blew my mind. I was around 14 or 15, and damn that thing just completely freaked me out, especially the scene with the dog with the human face. Little did I know it would come true 40 years later, right? He supports Trump! EEEEEEEEEE!!!

We had a young man come into our polling place wearing a MAGA hat. The two Democrat election officials did not complain, as the hat does not mention Trump and thus is not “electioneering”. Just to see their reaction I stepped close to him and said “Nope, doesn’t say Trump anywhere”.
Neither commented.
That RATs consider the flag partisan speaks volumes about them.
Poll workers are not permitted to show any political preference while working the election. That one should be fired.

Our polling place team consists of a judge, inspector and two clerks, two R and two D. Each has equal weight and any disputes have to be settled by vote of the team, then documented. I was judge this time around.
We were not made aware of that.

It would have took more than him saying that to stop me from voting. And if he wouldn’t give me a ballot I’d have caused a scene until someone called the police.

It’s not incorrect usage. A veteran is also a soldier of long service.
Methinks that John Reader is going to be considerably wealthier before too much time passes - we have here a denial of civil rights under color of authority. He can PERSONALLY sue the poll worker and everyone who supervised that Leftist POS, as well as the County and probably the State.
Besides, there was a USSC decision back in June that said that whatever you wear for clothing in a polling station is as protected by the 1st Amendment as it is outside of the polling station...so we’re dealing with a CLEAR violation of the law.
Sue EVERYONE involved, and this kind of problem will stop fairly quickly.
I was a volunteer at my polling place one year. I think we did receive some pay but it wasn't much.
My role was to look up the person's name on a list of registered voters to verify that they were registered. Most voters offered their drivers license to establish identity though I don't think that was required. I live in a rural area and it's perhaps not surprising that many voters were known to one or more poll workers.
If the person's name was on my list, then I drew a line through their name on the printout and the worker next to me handed them a ballot. As I recall, another worker would then access a second list of voters attached to a bulletin board at the entrance to the polling place and cross off the same name. In that way we maintained two separate lists of who had voted and who had not.
To answer your simple question, then, a poll worker could refuse to recognize the name on the list or could refuse to hand them a ballot. We did have a "supervisor" but none of the rest of us would have allowed for a situation to get out of hand like the one described in the posted article. When it comes to affecting a person's vote, it's critical to make the right decision and there are resources available to make sure the decision is right. One can always issue a "provisional ballot" which is segregated from the rest and which can be fully accepted at a later time when all the facts and the applicable law are determined.
