More than 1,600 scientists signed a letter denouncing President Trump administrations plan to narrow the definition of gender to be strictly biological, according to Buzzfeed.
The letter was written in response to a memo reportedly drafted by the Department of Health and Human Services, according to the New York Times.
The memo states that any disputes about a persons sex would be clarified using genetic testing, which scientists who signed the letter called unscientific and unethical.
This proposal is fundamentally inconsistent not only with science, but also with ethical practices, human rights, and basic dignity, the scientists wrote.
Among the signatories are eight Nobel laureates.
The letter emphasizes that both biological sex and gender are on a spectrum and are not clear cut.
Our best available evidence shows that affirmation of gender identity is paramount to the survival, health, and livelihood of transgender and intersex people, the letter states.
More than 50 companies signed onto a statement released Wednesday supporting transgender equality.

X & Y chromosomes are not settled science, but Climate change is ?
just shoot me.
Send a note back
To the 1600 Super Smart Scientists too damn stupid to figure out the difference between a males and females.
If it has a penis, it’s male
If it has a vagina it’s female
If it has both penis and vagina, it can flip a coin and cut one off.
If it has a penis but thinks it’s a female, it has a mental issue, and vice Versa for a female thinking it’s a man. They need mental help.
You are now on a list of scientists the American taxpayers will no longer support with any financing. We only want the best, and you have proven you are not it....or even remotely close to being it since you still can’t tell the difference.
Signed
President Trump - Real Man!
No. Just idiots.
These ‘scientists’ are not very scientific.
I bet those scientists all work for the DEEP STATE!
Scientists against science.
If I was offered a choice between a modern college degree and a roll of toilet paper, I would choose the toilet paper because it’s softer.
I would love to see how that list defines scientist and I wonder how many no there on the list.
“””Scientists”””
There are 2 sexes.. not two genders. Sex is what you can identify using scientific analysis of your DNA... therefore it is identifying... gender is what you do in the bed room and has no place in serious discussion about identifying an individual.
This really shakes up the fundaments of science. Its no longer based on what something is physically, its based on what you think it is. The possibilities are endless. Imagine what can be accomplished by just thinking it is so. Its the exciting new world of science fiction.
Amazing, we are certainly living in Biblical times.
Define “scientists “.. Because I don’t think that word means what you think it means.
not only is the signatories’ list full of climatists and environmentalists, it includes;
John P. Holdren, Ph.D.
Teresa and John Heinz Professor of Environmental Policy of Environmental Science,
Harvard University
https://not-binary.org/statement/
there are 33 names with Environmental in their description.
also:
Allison Crimmins, Environmental Scientist in Climate Change, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
How about we stop speaking or caring about gender except when teaching a foreign language? Sex is the only relevant characteristic, and that has nothing to do with how you feel about your (real or imagined) genitalia.
“...psychologists and the like are not scientists...”
I beg to differ. I earned a degree in psychology and attended a year of Grad School in Social Psychology 50 years ago. In those days, one of the most carefully discussed topics in the field was “what is it that we can SCIENTIFICALLY study as psychology?” These individuals would have failed that part of the course.
We made a real effort in those days to make the study of behavior (the scientific definition of psychology) as rigorous and fact oriented as physics. I consider myself a scientist; I can’t see how the ‘psychologists’ in this group even got into Graduate School.
