US-backed Syria force suspends anti-IS attacks after Turkey hits

A Kurdish-led force backed by a US-led coalition on Wednesday suspended operations against the Islamic State group and said they would not resume until Turkey halts its attacks on Kurdish militia posts in northern Syria.

The Syrian Democratic Forces, joint Arab-Kurdish units under Kurdish command, announced a "temporary halt" to their operation, launched in eastern Syria on September 10, and condemned Turkey's "provocations".

On Wednesday, Turkish shelling of Kurdish positions in the Kobane sector of northern Syria killed four fighters, according to Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency.

The SDF condemned what it called the "coordination" of Turkey's attacks with a fightback by jihadists and warned of "a prolonged halt to our military operation" against IS if Ankara keeps up its strikes.

The US State Department said it had been in touch with both Turkey and the SDF to push for de-escalation.

"Unilateral military strikes into northwest Syria by any party, particularly as American personnel may be present or in the vicinity, are of great concern to us," State Department spokesman Robert Palladino told reporters on Wednesday.

"Coordination and consultation between the United States and Turkey on issues of security concern is a better approach."

Hundreds of Kurdish civilians, carrying party flags and portraits of jailed Turkish Kurdish separatist leader Abdullah Ocalan, demonstrated in the streets of the northeastern city of Qamishli to denounce the Turkish attacks.

"These attacks serve to support the mercenaries" of IS, said a protester, 44-year-old teacher Rizan Hamo. "The international community and the world must stop the Turkish state."

“Khashnogi stuff” will blow over. SA and Turkey have a long history. Not good. It won’t blow over there.

I think you misunderstood.
Turkey has effectively annexed the bordering areas in NW Syria.
And his terrorists are infecting Syrian areas, no problem for Turks.

The E Syria battle took a bad turn with that sandstorm. Very bad. SDF intrepididity is quite impressive.
I haven’t heard nuch about them lately- their makeup was mixed Arab and Kurds with Kurds predominate. Wonder if that’s changed.

I see!
I mesnt ‘good for himself’ not “good” in the moral sense.
Should have used ‘well’ originally.

“SA and Turkey have a long history.”

Turrtey will let it ‘blow over’ for a price. Maybe SA’s support of Erd’s ‘people’ in Idlib?

That was such a stupid act I believe it was done by an enemy of MBS.

The Turks need a tall glass of reality, next time they shell the Kurds. Doesn't have to kill any of their troops (although, who cares?) just has to destroy some of their tanks, guns, buildings -- on Syrian soil.

Another reason Trump needn’t stop dealing with Saudi...Turkey tried to leverage the embassy killing like the dems tried to leverage Ford.

Absolutely no way.

“That was such a stupid act I believe it was done by an enemy of MBS.”

The SDF makeup is still the same. Might be a bit more of the MFS (Assyrians).

The losses were bad for them lately, but it is because of the desperation of the hard core remnants of ISIS concentrated for their last stand in Eastern Syria.

Nobody ever questions the Kurds bravery. And US forces hold them in high respect for a reason.

Turkey is a sick nation. Financially very shaky, culturally divided with high element of Jihadi’s who are nothing but big trouble. Military affected with lack of good leadership because of the purge.
