A Kurdish-led force backed by a US-led coalition on Wednesday suspended operations against the Islamic State group and said they would not resume until Turkey halts its attacks on Kurdish militia posts in northern Syria.
The Syrian Democratic Forces, joint Arab-Kurdish units under Kurdish command, announced a "temporary halt" to their operation, launched in eastern Syria on September 10, and condemned Turkey's "provocations".
On Wednesday, Turkish shelling of Kurdish positions in the Kobane sector of northern Syria killed four fighters, according to Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency.
The SDF condemned what it called the "coordination" of Turkey's attacks with a fightback by jihadists and warned of "a prolonged halt to our military operation" against IS if Ankara keeps up its strikes.
The US State Department said it had been in touch with both Turkey and the SDF to push for de-escalation.
"Unilateral military strikes into northwest Syria by any party, particularly as American personnel may be present or in the vicinity, are of great concern to us," State Department spokesman Robert Palladino told reporters on Wednesday.
"Coordination and consultation between the United States and Turkey on issues of security concern is a better approach."
Hundreds of Kurdish civilians, carrying party flags and portraits of jailed Turkish Kurdish separatist leader Abdullah Ocalan, demonstrated in the streets of the northeastern city of Qamishli to denounce the Turkish attacks.
"These attacks serve to support the mercenaries" of IS, said a protester, 44-year-old teacher Rizan Hamo. "The international community and the world must stop the Turkish state."

Turkish attacks against the SDF only stopped because US patrols arrived in Tall Abyad and Kobane some hours ago
My guess would be that the strikes were about Afrin or other guerila fighting. Common practise in ME to attack civilians in retaliation.
Last I heard the count in Syria has been 2, one in a overturned vehicle.
What could possibly go wrong?
EMBRACE is a word that comes to mind too.
They gave SAFE HAVEN AND SAFE PASSAGE to monsters. Bought their oil.
Only the Kurds holding out until Trump won kept things from getting EVEN WORSE.
Common practice by Erdogan the Islamist Dictator of Turkey and his Neo Ottoman dream.
Turkey, Russia, Germany, France had a meeting in Istanbul this past weekend. I think it might have made Erdogan very angry. (when is he not?)

Turkish President Erdogan says Turkey signals “final warning” on Syria (26 October 2018 21:33)

So Turkey’s actions are having the desired effect?
I don’t know... seems to me he’s doing good with lots of conquered teritory in the NW of Syria.
Maybe Obama promised him even more- maybe all of NW Syria west of the Euphrates. Plus letting him align with China (I know, I’m the only one who looks at the ME as China’s game LOL!)
Anyway Trump is mostly stuck with Obama’s promises, though there’s always wiggle room. And he’s not letting China go anywhere for free.
(Maybe something to do with SA is going on? Erd has them over the barrel with the Khashnogi stuff.)
I watched Mattis’ interview last night. Was wondering how things were going there and he never talked specifically about Turks.

My, how can you miss the disaster of replanting ISIS in Efrin, along with Nusra, Al Sham and Ughrs (China).
Plunder, rape, murder, sex slavery, defiling dead soldiers bodies, Destroying cultural antiquities, bombing cemeteries for spite, indiscriminate killing of civilians. They did all of that.
Erdogan NEVER tried to end ISIS, he has always supported it. And he is right now by stopping the conquest of the remaining ISIS in East Syria. At great loss of life. In one week there were 75 SDF deaths.
Erdogan’s desire is to take over the entire Middle East.
But yes, he is stopping the end of ISIS. But what he is really doing is pursuing his Neo Ottoman dream.
