Notorious Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger was found dead at a federal prison in West Virginia Tuesday, federal officials said.
Bulger, 89, had recently arrived at the high-security penitentiary USP Hazelton in West Virginia, according to the Boston Herald.
The feared former leader of the Winter Hill Gang, Bulger was convicted in 2013 of participating in 11 murders stretching from Massachusetts to Florida to Oklahoma.

During my gov’t career I did a lot of work in Bureau of Prisons facilities. There was a case at FCI Oxford (Wisconsin) of an inmate doing in a corrections officer with a fire extinguisher to the head.

No kidding...seemed forever to hit 16 and driving then 21 for drinking and driving! Later, no more drinking and driving.
Many years ago, when I was writing and editing books, I was approached, through an intermediary, by a fellow who has been in then Winter Hill gang in Boston, then in witness protection program to help him write an “as told by” book about Whitey Bulger. He said he knew where Whitey was at the time and nobody else did. Crooked FBI guy involved too.
I called two agents I knew, thinking it was an opportunity to make some $$$, but they both said NO. My NY agent said I’d be killed. I lived in the country at the time and she said the FBI would shoot me over the back fence and Whitey’s friends would shoot me over the front fence.
Excellent advice. Whitey was in Santa Monica, as it turned out, and was still “doing his own killing.”
Don’t know what happened to the young gangster who contacted me. I actually liked him a lot.....

Mueller had something to do with letting Bukger stay free for a very long time as he was a source for the FBI for other murderers. I am sure that NBC is right on reporting that connection /s
No point in killing Whitey for revenge at age 89. Plenty of point in killing him for what he might say.

But of course I do. I also know of a case where an inmate fashioned an eventually lethal shank out of a paper mache wad of toilet paper. Then there was a 25 acp smuggled in via a rectum. The stories go on and on.
Whitey spent his California years in Santa Monica, not Malibu.
