Notorious Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger was found dead at a federal prison in West Virginia Tuesday, federal officials said.
Bulger, 89, had recently arrived at the high-security penitentiary USP Hazelton in West Virginia, according to the Boston Herald.
The feared former leader of the Winter Hill Gang, Bulger was convicted in 2013 of participating in 11 murders stretching from Massachusetts to Florida to Oklahoma.

To poach (and paraphrase) a quote from Bette Davis:
“I will not speak ill of the dead. Only good.”
“Whitey Bulger is dead... GOOD.”
“He fell.”
He was Murdered inside a Club Fed Prison?
Let me guess, he was hit in the Head with a Croquet Mallet.
Montana, if memory serves.
I'm guessing he was draftee, so he was probably around 19 or 20.
Lord knows what he got away with, growing up in South Boston.
“The FBI always gets their man.”
Yeah, Zip Connally. Think he’s sending flowers?
Doesn’t/didn’t he have a connection with Robert Mueller? Seems he did.
IIRC, the US Marshall Service was LEO that nabbed him in Malibu, or where ever he was hiding in plain sight.
The Bulgers are a favorite topic of Howie Carr. Tune into WRKO to get a good rundown at 3:00 PM EST.
Howie wrote a book on him, and many an article years ago that had Howie under a "contract" from Whitey.
Howie is a gem, the show he had when Ted Kennedy died and when Scott Brown won were freaking classics...
He lived free for most of his life, most of it in cozy Malibu while on the run, and only served five years for his various murders. Hate to say it, but by dying at 89 Whitey had a way longer and better life than he deserved.
WTH?!?!?
It’s like “this thing really may end one day!! They weren’t lying!!”
I guess I got hit with a bad injury early on, head injury at 37, so that at what is middle age to most feels older and most my age aren’t thinking like myself.
Or maybe they do.
Yeah I believe in God and think I do the right thing for the most part, but we’re human and fear of the unknown is just natural!!
Funny thing is when I was feeling closest to death, with rampant palpitations due to autonomic dysfunction, I wasn’t frightened at all and death seemed like the most natural thing in the world.
Maybe God planned it like that to make it easier for us.
BOY did I ramble!!
Must have needed to. Thanks.
Didn’t know he was still alive.
Does the guy who killed him get “cred” or does he just end up on someone else’s hit list?
Let’s keep in mind that Mueller kept 4 innocent men in prison to protect his secret source: White Bulger.
“Why is it that as I get older things that feel like they happened yesterday were five or even TEN years ago!!!”
When you were one year old Christmas took your entire lifetime to arrive. When you were two it took half as long to arrive. At 80 it seems like ever ten minutes is breakfast.
Hmmm, I don’t remember that, but it would be very interesting.
Robert Mueller is deeply saddened.
Hope the scumbag took it look a champ at the end, having a blade put up him !
Never thought of it that way :(
Makes a lot of sense.
I guess the flip side is “this too shall pass” is VERY believable as we get older, when something bad happens.
That was my comment.
Now Whitey can’t talk about deals he made with Bobby.
When you’re older, you’ve got more time under your belt so a given amount of time seems smaller by comparison to what you’ve been through than when you had less time under your belt. Hope that makes sense.
