San Jose is launching a new program to clean up the streets while also helping get people off them.
The initiative will employ 25 homeless residents to pick up trash at 40 "litter hotspots" around the city. The employees will be paid $15 per hour and work four to five hours per day.
announced by Mayor Sam Liccardo Thursday in partnership with Goodwill and Downtown Streets Team. Participants will start picking up trash in November.
While the pay is better than San Jose's minimum wage (currently at $13.50 per hour as it scales toward $15 by 2019), it's probably still not enough to afford living in the South Bay city, even if the work were full-time. A one-bedroom apartment costs an average $2,364 a month, according to Rent Cafe.

Good way to make sure there will ALWAYS be garbage there.
Why don’t they do that for high schools kids on summer break?
it’s probably their trash they’re picking up
sort of like getting an allowance to clean your room
What id they do a bad job? Will they be fired? If they get fired, how will they pay their rent??
Oh. Wait. Never mind.
This is a jobs creation program for the politically connected as the homeless, unfortunately, are incapable of constructive employment.
Hmmmmm reminds be of the time around here that a glass company owner went out one night and smashed up a bunch of school bus windows. Then, as soon as it hit the paper, he rushed over to offer his services to the school district at a cut rate....for the good of the schools dont ya know.
Imagine what the homeless could do with the same concept.
They will work 2 or 3 hours and then they will file a disability claim against the city or state. Picking up trash causes”lower back pain”and a lot of “pychological stress.” Mark my words.
They will become unionized in 5, 4, 3, 2...
Seattle tried this earlier this year. Offered $15 an hour for the homel SD to help pick up junk in their own camps. Guess how many took the city up on the offer? ZERO. Unsurprisingly, the city leaders were perplexed.
County jail? Community service? That is FREE.
Will they get the loot for picking up the poop?
They don't want them to do a good job. If they did the garbage would be picked up in a few days or less. This is suppose to be an on going lefty jobs program. If they do a good job the people who are getting six figures to administer this will lose their jobs.
My income from SS and two retirement payments averages $11.50/hr if divided into a 40-hour week. These homeless are doing a lot better than I am.
That's a vicious circle. Around here, anyone can find employment at the least sought-for jobs. Some franchise foods, grocery stores, retail give everyone a chance if they stay sober, can pass a drug test, and aren't total criminals. There is even one county-subsidized dollar store that employs only those with extreme special needs, with just a few managers. These people do fine. They feel a sense of worth. We all become more accepting of those who seem to step up to being productive. Everyone can contribute something. A big problem is we've zombified with drugs and enabled with handouts do nothing bad behavior.
Often when it comes up that the underclass could be given a few dollars for things like park cleanup instead of handouts, it's the unions that object.
BINGO!!
Coyote Trail was a great walking trail until the homeless moved in. It’s a mini trash dump now and forget about the rules on the board entering the trail that say no camping!!! I guess they tell the police that they are not camping there but living there full time!!
It’s gross and unsafe. The construction trash they’ve hauled in to build their tent town is amazing.
So much for a walk in the great outdoors anymore....
Classic “Broken Window” economics.
Compared to bullet trains, etc;; Am I the only one her to think this is a positive idea for CA to try?
Man if I was homeless I’d be all over that and trying to stack up a few dollars.
I suppose they are afraid of losing bennies maybe?
