Oregon May Elect a GOP Governor for First Time in 36 Years

PORTLAND, Ore.—To find enough votes to win the governorship in a state that last elected a Republican leader in 1982, Knute Buehler has focused on voters like Danielle Miller.

A 47-year-old mortgage-loan officer, Ms. Miller voted in 2016 for Kate Brown, Oregon’s incumbent Democratic governor, but has since grown disenchanted with her on issues including education funding and homelessness.

This year, Ms. Miller isn’t planning just to vote for Mr. Buehler, a two-term Republican state representative. She is campaigning for him and even appeared in one of his commercials.

“This is the first candidate I’m crossing party lines for in 20 years,” she said on a sunny Sunday morning in east Portland, before knocking on doors to solicit votes for the Republican. “Oregon is so behind in so many ways...under our current leadership.”

Mr. Buehler, 54, is aggressively courting moderate Democrats unhappy enough with Ms. Brown that they will defy their party despite the highly partisan national atmosphere. His strategy has turned the campaign for the governor’s office in Oregon into a race that’s tighter—and tenser—than expected in this solidly blue state.

“People are worried,” said Rand Klemp, 61, co-owner of Portland coffeehouse Anna Bannanas, of many of his patrons. “We’re thinking, how can Oregon go with a Republican governor in this day and age?”

If Mr. Buehler wins, Oregon would join the handful of states won by Hillary Clinton in 2016, including Massachusetts and Vermont, that have Republican governors. Among states won by Mrs. Clinton, the only other governor’s race where a Republican has a shot is Connecticut, said Jennifer Duffy, an analyst with the Cook Political Report.

Recent polls show Ms. Brown ahead by between one and five percentage points. Real Clear Politics and Cook Political Report rate the race a “toss up.”

"Mr. Buehler has sought to remind voters in television ads and social-media messages that he is pro-choice, pro-gay rights, and believes climate change is real."

???

Is he saying this stuff just to win???

Probably so. A RINO is probably the best that we could hope for in Oregon. It’s an open question as to whether that’s better than a Democrat, IMHO.

Sounds RINO.

Don't knock it - a RINO who at least believes in law and order and fiscal responsibility would be a huge upgrade for Oregon. It isn't like a Roy Moore is going to relocate there and stage an upset.

Buehler is making a huge mistake that RINO’s typically make. He is trying so hard to come across as a middle of the roader that he is bound to get run over November 6th. Brown is a pathetic tax and spend liberal that has caused the public schools in her State to nosedive in the ratings. She has managed to delay the release of the latest State by State evaluations until after the election. Republicans are in an uproar but are powerless to do a damn thing. If Buehler could learn a little from Donald he would win easy, but he prefers to remain balless.

Even the Left eventually realizes that no one can actually live in the “utopias” they create. Eventually Antifa smashes everybody’s car. Too bad. I lived half my life in the Northwest. Beautiful place. I would never live there again.

I see your point, but in MA we have Governor Charlie Baker, who said “reasonable” things, but really meant them. He’s so RINO he might as well declare himself a Democrat.

A Republican Governor will be stoned or maybe tarred and feathered in Portland.

No better time than now!

EVERY RINO and GOPe and true Conservative NEEDS to jump on the Trump Train right NOW, and ride it to VICTORY on November 6th!

We need as many Dems DEFEATED as during the 0bama years (1,000+ seats LOST at every level of Government!) and we’ll Primary out the RINOs and GOPe at a later date.

We can have a two-party system again when the Dems return as The Loyal Opposition, free of the Radical Leftists who are now running their party.

Until then? This. Is. War. The Dems have no IDEA how mad and motivated, ‘We The People’ are! :)

We can only hope he gets elected and has enough backbone to send the national guard into Portland to restore law and order....

I wouldn’t hold my breath. Oregon voters are about as stupid and communist as you can get. If they were being herded into boxcars headed towards the ovens by the satancrats, and the elections were being held the same day, they would stop the boxcars just so they could get out to vote for more satancrats.

I laughed. You are correct. Portland, most atheist city in the US.

Watch out for all those Kalifornians moving to Idaho. Some of us from Oregon may want to escape there
