Texas voting machines changing some straight-party selections

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Voters are reporting odd problems on both the Republican and Democratic side of straight-party voting in Texas.

Mickey Blake was one of the voters in those early voting lines in Houston earlier this week.

"I hit straight Democratic ticket," Blake said.

She says she expected all Democrats to come up on her screen, especially Rep. Beto O'Rourke, but when she got to the last screen to review her choices, she noticed a problem.

That’s a feature, not a bug, as they say in Austin.

The machine took pity on the voter and tried to give her a filled-out ballot with some intelligent choices instead of all the losers she’d voted for...

,,,otherwise known as the “Beto-and-switch”.

Where I voted they were all paper ballots scanned on a common machine. Not an automated machine in sight this time around. I went through each item because I don’t trust even the scanner. Every vote comes with a paper trail.

Moreover, each voting slip was printed for the voter after ID was scanned. No extra slips seem to even be printed using this approach.

So none of those LBJ’s box 13s in my town.

The line was long despite the rain but moved fast.

Darn nice set up.

This happened in the Presidential election in 2016 as well.

Everyone needs to go back to paper ballots!!! I was working elections in the late 80s into early 90s in Virginia. The voting machines were scary and no different in that respect today. You cannot do a recount, you cannot be sure of your own vote. We’ve seen time and again that machines can be hacked, maybe programmed bad anyway. I don’t trust any result.

In 2016 in Precinct 152 in beautiful Detroit they had 52 people cast paper ballots and 306 votes for Hillary. They blamed it on the counting machine. That piece of information came out during the recount right before it was stopped.

Monday I voted in my great state of Texas. I was given the choice of a paper ballot or electronic ballot. I told the very nice lady that I do not trust electronic balloting and please give me the paper ballot.

I am not computer adverse and use them every day. I know full well that a few lines of code can change what you think you voted for.

Electronic voting must end.

Go read the article. It’s a hit job on Cruz. ‘rats are so predictable and they’re pulling out all the stops for Joto.

I smell a Democrat ‘rat’ trying to cause doubt about the election.

Agree. I’m a Texas resident and voted yesterday. Was paper ballot. I think the reason the line moved so fast was because most folks voted straight party ticket. Just had to darken one block and it’s done. Yeaa.....

Looks more like the butterfly ballot battle than hanging chads. Voters who can’t follow simple instructions, yet who should be trusted with the sovereign franchise.

I voted without an issue early here in Texas. Hit straight-ticket Republican and then replaced the Bush kid with the Libertarian. No issues.

I kind of doubt that the electronic machines would let the voters know they were being reversed. It’s much easier to simply add a couple of lines of code that goes like this: “for Democrats multiply total votes by 1.11111 and round off”
“for Republicans, multiply total votes by 0.9 and round off”

You pencil in the ‘bubble’ and the machine reads the graphite marks?

Yes, we have that in Halifax County, Virginia. I think it's the absolute best — simple. Automated, understandable, and a paper trail for verification.

Sounds like you have a bunch of George P. Bush supporters in your community.

“most folks voted straight party ticket. Sounds like you have a bunch of George P. Bush supporters in your community.” Not necessarily. However, imho the worst Republican is far better than the any Democrat 😉.....
