A group of civil rights organizations is pushing technology companies to create policies to more effectively address hate speech and extremist groups.
The six organizations, joined by 40 other organizations who echoed the call, wrote in a report that they want the platforms to take more firm stances against racism, sexism, xenophobia, religious bigotry, homophobia and transphobia, and enforce policies against hate speech and extremist groups more strictly.
The groups, which include the Center for American Progress, Color Of Change, Free Press, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the National Hispanic Media Coalition and the Southern Poverty Law Center, said that they plan to release report cards next year of how social media firms are handling the recommendations.
It is not enough for companies to apologize after incidents like last years Charlottesville rally and last weeks Proud Boys attacks, said Brandi Collins, senior campaign director at Color Of Change. They must quickly, assertively, and proactively remove the forces who threaten our democracy by adopting and implementing these policies.
Major technology companies have fumbled for solutions as white supremacists and other extremist groups have organized and grown in numbers on their platforms.
Facebook attempted to purge its platform of white nationalist and supremacist groups last year in the wake of the riots in Charlottesville, Va., that turned fatal, leading to a wave of other tech platforms making similar removals.
Platforms like Twitter and Reddit held onto being bastions of unbridled free speech until hateful content became too pervasive to ignore.
Many, especially those against platforms tightening their speech standards, have painted the matter as a conflict between free speech and censorship, however, the organizations argued in their report that the lines between the two values are more nuanced than that.
They argued that hate speech and coordinated hate against specific groups forms its own censorship.
Online tools have been used to coordinate attacks, including violence against people of color, immigrants, religious minorities, LGBTQIA people, women and people with disabilities, the report reads. This chills the online speech of the targeted groups, curbs democratic participation, and threatens peoples safety and freedom in real life.

Yes, SPLC is a self serving hate group.
“free speech” is a civil liberty—that is, a natural right derived from the very nature of Creation. “Civil Rights” are rights created by Government, and as such, are often in derogation of natural rights.
Talk about projection. The threat comes from the LEFT. “Charlottesville” has become an all-purpose excuse, when the reality was 200 cranks marching. Not some mass movement.
The SPLC (one of the “civil rights groups” natch) has actual blood on its hands. The Bernie bro who shot up the Republican softball practice “liked” SPLC on Facebook. The guy who tried to shoot up the Family Research Council office in DC and shot a security guard - got their name from an SPLC (ironically named) “Hate List”.
“Hate Speech” is purely fictional, it only exists in the feeble minds of brainwashed leftists.
“People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.”

Indeed, hate crime legislation is not a means to protect minorities but to protect leftist terrorists to bomb people under cover of Political Correctness.
Trolling and PC should be considered a national security issue
Translation: Crack down on free speech by the right.
Define “hate” speech. It is whatever the left wants it to be to further their agenda and may change at any time to further that ever-changing agenda.
Yet THEY get to define hate speech. Ummmmm. No

Republican/Conservative speech must be silenced, or it will force them to be violent again.

Know what every one of these groups have in common? They all hate Judeo/Christian heterosexual males.
