Defense Secretary James Mattis is expected to sign an order sending up to 800 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border amid President Trump’s ongoing focus on a migrant caravan traveling to the United States, according to multiple reports.
Citing unidentified U.S. officials, reports said Mattis could sign the order as soon as Thursday to send hundreds of U.S. service members to help with logistical support such as providing tents and fencing.
A Pentagon spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.
The Pentagon, though, previously said it had received no official request from the White House to send more troops to the border.
Since last week, Trump has said he plans to bring in the military to reinforce the southern border as a group of thousands of migrants makes it from Central America.
The caravan is currently traversing Mexico, and Trump administration officials have vowed not to allow the group to cross into the United States.
On Thursday morning, Trump tweeted that he is “bringing out the military for this National Emergency.”
“They will be stopped!” he added.
In April, Trump directed Mattis to send 4,000 National Guardsmen to the U.S.-Mexico border amid frustrations at the lack of progress on his proposed wall.
About 2,100 Guardsmen are currently providing technical assistance at the border.
Instead of turning the mob/invasion back, we will make this camp more permanent replete with disease, birth and a form of permanency.

Not nearly enough, should be at least 8,000 troops. The 800 will include cooks, clerks, etc., we need 8,000 COMBAT troops, ready to engage, and not sit back and observe or try to scare the invaders away.

Double or triple that amount easily and what about the numbers of up to 7,000 or so reportedly who have split off into smaller groups from that larger caravan who are looking to sneak across the border all along that border or are already sneaking in every day and night and the other thousands that are simply walking across everyday with the coyotes guiding them already and simply disappearing?
Oh Man... If there was ever a time to show force in numbers and equipment this would be it...
This will do absolutely no good unless they are all physically attached to Lethal Armored Equipment and Apache Helicopters.
It’s like taking one bandaid to a knife fight.
The US needs to declare a Cordon Sanitaire on the first 10 miles of the border ON THE MEXICAN SIDE.
Probably the first symbolic step would be for US aircraft to begin regularly flying in that area, demonstrating an ongoing violation of Mexican airspace/territory.
And if The Caravan doesn’t stop, then radically step up vehicle/truck inspections.
Then ban all foot traffic.
Then put US vehicles juuuust over the border.
Then do something major, like chopper in and secure a FOB someplace north of the main body of The Caravan.
hey folks - think for a minute. Where will those thousands of troops stay????? Makes perfect sense to set up the logistical base for those soldiers ahead of the actual deployment.

Deploy about 100 Predator drones with hellfires.
It’s enough. One US Soldier to ten invaders, and other pathways blocked by US Border Patrol.
But POTUS is facing a dilemma which is the ‘Law’, the stupid law, requires certain procedures for catch and release once they cross the border and shout ‘Asylum Please!’.
It’s going to be a game of chicken with armed soldiers and BP Agents facing down the invaders and running sideways along border routes letting the invaders know their game is up.
The end result should be Congress sending a bill to POTUS to fund the Wall. Americans will agree a Wall is much safer, practical, and manageable.
I fear that Trump, not being a military man himself, is being hoodwinked by one or more of his generals.
I’ll know they’re serious when they add two more zeros to that number.
Mattis has done that several times to him.
