A $20-billion bridge connecting Hong Kong and Macau to the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai is set to finally open this week, marking the completion of the longest sea-crossing bridge ever built, nine years after construction began.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to attend a ceremony in Zhuhai on Tuesday, along with top officials from Hong Kong and Macau, with the bridge opening to public traffic Wednesday.

The 55-kilometer (34-mile) bridge was originally due to open in 2016, but repeated delays pushed that to this year.

Not showing it on your link. Too new?

There was another site I checked and it had a ‘map’ - will try and find it.

Personally, when it comes to Chinese structures of any type, I’d worry about concrete made with garbage and steel made on the cheap, and THEN I’d fret about crossing it during a tsunami.

I doubt whoever is responsible for the bridge building will skimp on cheap materials or lousy job work

If anything happens like a bridge collapse, the Chinese Government will most likely put you to death if they find out you cheated them on the bridge building lol

The Chinese don’t kowtow to the don’t-buld-anything-anywhere mentality of the Western world.

“Personally, when it comes to Chinese structures of any type, I’d worry about concrete made with garbage and steel made on the cheap”

That bridge was built by Swire and Hutchenson Whampoa which are based in Hong Kong

It will be built right.

After some high profile failures of monumental projects like this in China, the quality improved. A few public execution has a wonderful affect on Quality Control.

Most of it shows up on the Google map. The bridge out of Macau seems to end at an artificial island about 7 miles short of the Hong Kong airport. Tunnel under the main channel?

This project has been in the works for years, but I had never seen any news articles before. Since it is such a huge endeavor, I’m puzzled by the lack of coverage until now.

Hmmmm???

Took less time than fixing the George Washington Bridge and road which is still undergoing repairs.

“Pour encourager les autres” Voltaire in Candide

In order to encourage the others —said ironically of an action (such as an execution) carried out as a warning to others

“The phrase is found in the famous (and actually historical) scene of the execution of a British admiral, John Byng, on the deck of his own ship, for allegedly failing to engage the enemy in the Battle of Minorca. Voltaire adds of this:

“Dans ce pays-ci, il est bon de tuer de temps en temps un amiral pour encourager les autres.” (“In this country, it is wise to kill an admiral from time to time so to encourage the others.”)

From the last paragraph of your Fortune Magazine link:

“Subcontractors carrying out works have been found to be endangering their workers, and questions have been raised as to the safety of the bridge itself, after photos that emerged earlier this year appeared to show concrete blocks from the construction “floating away.” Though officials said the placement of the blocks was intentional, it’s not a good time to have the safety of you bridge called into question.”

4 mile tunnel to allow ship traffic thru.

Took a high speed commuter boat from Hong Kong to Macau a couple years ago.
Bet that boat is still faster than driving the 34 mile stretch!

Not a lot vehicle traffic in Hong Kong. Big on public transportation. Not like Beijing.

... have been found to be endangering their workers,...

During the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam (now Hoover), in excavating the side tunnels, some number of the dump truck drivers and/or workers were being asphyxiated from CO.

The powers that be had the MDs write up the deaths as from pneumonia and the like.

Thanks. It looked like the island I saw was the south end of a tunnel, but I never did spot the north end - saw what might be the road going around the airport, and then just disappearing.

Putin certainly is a more efficient bridge builder, the Americans probably less efficient - we’d probably still be litigating environmental impact statements.

uring the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam (now Hoover),

Hoover = Boulder Dam (on the Colorado River).

Grand Coulee = Grand Coulee (on the Columbia River)
