DES MOINES, Iowa — The Mega Millions jackpot has climbed to $970 million, inching ever-closer to the $1 billion mark.

Officials raised the estimated jackpot Thursday for the second time due to strong sales ahead of Friday night's drawing.

The prize is the second-largest jackpot in U.S. history, behind only a $1.6 billion Powerball prize won in 2016.

No. I am most definitely not. The lottery is a racket. That said, for $2 I can rent a daydream for a day or two. It typically runs me around $12 for a movie that rarely runs more than 2.5 hrs. In terms value for money the lottery is the better entertainment buy... as long as you understand that in reality your chances of winning are about the same as being attacked by a shark in your living room while watching a National Geographic special on TV.

Now you will excuse me while I go back to pricing private islands.

The $970 million refers to the annuity option, paid over 29 years. Most winners take the cash option, which would pay an immediate $513 million.

5.53% rate of return on that annuity. Buy stocks, gold or even a Congressman if you want a bigger return.

By not spending money on Hollyweird movies I have extra money in my entertainment budget to get a few quick picks.

Let’s hope a FReeper wins the big jackpot and buys out all the FReepathons for a few years or decades.

Never take the annuity....take the cash and set up your own annuity.

I believe some state lottery computer networks crashed last time jackpot got this big.

At the c-store I stop in, it looked like the poorest people were buying the most tickets. Friday afternoon and evening will be nuts.

NBC is too lazy to check the Meg Millions website. The estimated cash payout is shown as $548 million...

I now identify, gender wise, as the winner of that lotto.

Anyone disagreeing with me is a nazi and racist.

What could any single person do with even HALF of that kind of jackpot?

Answering that could be a challenge. But I might be up for giving it a try.

This $2 ticket reminds me of the following I heard about going to see a movie that you are not sure if it is any good. Example First Man.

I’ll probably wait for RedBox.
That way it’s like a Lotto Ticket.
Lots of anticipation, fanciful dreams, followed by disappointment, but only out a dollar.

Maybe some yuge volunteer work for eight years.

Poor man’s tax. “Gotta play to win” but I see people dumping a weeks paycheck into these tix. People that don’t appear to be able to spare a weeks pay.
