Cannabis becomes legal in Canada

Country becomes second and largest with legal national marketplace.

The Canadian government is ready to pardon those with a cannabis possession record of 30 grams or less as the country becomes the world’s second and largest country with a legal national marijuana marketplace.

Canada legalizes marijuana: here's everything you need to know Read more A federal official said Canada would pardon people with convictions for possessing up to 30 grams of marijuana, the new legal threshold, with a formal announcement due later on Wednesday.

The use of medical marijuana has been legal in Canada since 2001 and Justin Trudeau’s government has spent two years working toward expanding that to include recreational marijuana. The goal is to better reflect society’s changing opinion about marijuana and bring black market operators into a regulated system.

Uruguay was the first country to legalise marijuana, in 2013.

Legalisation began at midnight with shops in Canada’s eastern-most provinces the first to sell the drug.

The very first thing that greeted me as I crossed the state line was a HUGE neon sign atop a pot dispensary.

Were you okay? Did it trigger you or traumatize you in any way? Did you seek therapy?

Legal cannabis is the ONLY thing Canada has that I’d like to see in the USA.

Thanks for the ping.

Wonder why in CA you have to show picture ID...like a DL. Fine if you look under age, but what possible reason could a pot dispensary want to copy your ID for? Careful.

but the ones I’ve been to generally look like nice cafes or expensive boutiques.

That's good to know, and gives me hope for MA!

One of the big reasons I’m against it: smoking pot = smoke = “2nd-hand smoke” inhaling = getting high against my will.

Quite honestly, you'd have to be sitting in a fully enclosed 8x12 room with three or four pot smokers puffing away like chimneys to get high from second hand smoke against your will. And that's assuming you didn't have the presence of mind or physical ability simply to get up and leave the room. To put it another way, this fear of yours is largely unfounded.

I would just say that in America we like people to have freedom as long as they are responsible and dont harm anyone else, and that we cant criminalize everything in the name of saftey.

Or else we can stop supporting gun rights too because accidental shootings and suicides far outnumber death by smoking pot.

Maybe, but there is nothing morally wrong with cashing your check.

Spoken like a user. :D

No, if you’re in an apartment complex, you think partying potheads won’t spread their smoke down the halls? It’s been smelled in larger and more open environments than that.

If it works for tobacco ninnies (which at least won’t alter their consciousness, BTW), it works for us pot ninnies.

Only because it’s been kept in check due to being illegal.

“Only because it’s been kept in check due to being illegal.”

That’s scaremongering and bad logic.

I could say that if we made guns illegal suicides and accidental death could be kept in check.

Did deliveries to the stores in a couple of cites last evening.
All hush-hush...not allowed in the facilities where products are produced.
Can't tell anyone where we picked, what we have on board or where we are delivering.
Security tags/seals on doors of trucks.
2 people have to be in the truck.

Sat in the truck 8 ^%#^&*@ hours waiting to be loaded. Hopefully their logistics will improve.

Folks receiving at the stores were excited and in good spirits about the opening today.
Joking with them as we unloaded.
Telling them the boxes were lighter than cases of beer and asking if they had anyone camping out front elicited some laughs.

All stores have a common construction and motif, in this province anyway...not sure of others...
