A lot of smart people believe that Elizabeth Warren, the senator from Massachusetts, is the front-runner for the Democratic nomination in 2020. A recent New York magazine profile by Jonathan Chait claimed that shes winning the invisible primary building campaign networks, rolling out policy proposals, wooing insiders, intimidating rivals.
*snip*
I am not a Democratic insider or a campaign professional, so for all I know Warren may indeed be impressing her intended audience.
*snip*
But running for president in the age of Donald Trump requires, above all, an ability to handle what John Heileman and Mark Halperin once called the freak show (back when it was considerably less freaky). It requires a deftness dealing with scandals and gaffes and accidental blunders, an ability to know when you have a wrestling move that justifies getting down in the mud and when youre better off sitting on a top rail and acting superior to the pigs.
*snip*
[W]hat Warren should have done when the story resurfaced, what she obviously should have done, was to simply express mild regret for letting her enthusiasm for family lore carry her away into identifying as someone who might possibly receive affirmative-action consideration, apologize to Cherokee groups for any offense, and literally never speak of the matter again. And if and when Donald Trump started up his Pocahontas jibes, she should have simply ignored him and talked about the many issues where hes on the wrong side of public opinion.

Sorry, couldn't possibly read an entire article that starts out with such a stupid premise...
...a lot of “smart” people thought
Hildabeast was presidential material too....eyep 100% sure
Front runner already crippled by Trump before getting to starting blocks.
I sense she’s a Patsy Schroeder for our time.
Glad to see the NY Slimes, being their normal, objective selves. /S

So far Warrens main encounter with the freak show has involved her claim to Cherokee ancestry, which was an issue in her last Senate campaign, in 2012, before Trump started in with his nicknaming. And from her initial response to the story through the new DNA test rebuttal to the president, she has demonstrated a conspicuous lack of political common sense.
The author repeats the lie the test proved “some” Native American ancestry. No Native American DNA was involved in the test. The researcher used proxies for Native American blood.
One can hope Linsday Graham’s test will show he has real Native American DNA and more than the researcher projected for Ms. Warren. If so, Trump will be able to once again flog this potential Dem 2020 opponent.
So out of curiosity who do you think is the front runner?
(I agree that Warren seems unlikely at best)
She brought in upon herself. Back in 2012, Cherokee leaders criticized her for claims about her heredity. How does a dem not know that it’s not a good thing to trivialize tribal connections.
I stopped reading after first sentence about smart people.
This Warren mess also sends a message to other potential Presidential contenders that the 2020 election is going to be rawer and rougher than a Wrestlemania match.
The OP is generally right on, but gets the results wrong.
The new info arsing from the DNA test is that it only proves fauxahantas has LATINO heritage, not Cherokee nor ANY North American Indian tribe.
If she thinks this will die down, it might for the moment. But if she thinks she has a shot at POTUS, this was her howard dean scream moment. It is now part of political lore.
What’s the Cherokee word for “crazy lady”?
<><> Harvard's 1999 Affirmative Action Plan Book appears to identify Warren as N/A, not by name, but it could not possibly be anyone else.
The latter document is important b/c:
(A) Harvard is considered a federal contractor,
(B) its employment practices fall under the Dept of Labors Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP).
(C) the compliance program requires a contractor, to discover barriers to equal employment opportunity.
======================================
WIKI---OFCCP administers and enforces three legal authorities that require equal employment opportunity:
<><> Executive Order 11246, as amended;
<><> Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended; and.
<><> the Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974, as amended, 38 U.S.C. 4212.
These authorities prohibit Federal contractors and subcontractors from discriminating on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, and protected veteran status. They also require Federal contractors and subcontractors to take affirmative action to ensure equal employment opportunity in their employment processes. Its regulations can be found at CFR Title 41 Chapter 60: Public Contracts and Property Management.
DISMANTLE CFPB.
I like the part where Douthat declares Warren, “Possibly somewhat more Indian than one-1,024th Cherokee (or some other mix of tribes).” That is pretty funny, though I think he meant it to be serious.
Patsy Schroeder and Jane Fonda, share one thing in common. Both are BITTERLY hated by veterans. There is nothing either one could EVER do, to redeem themselves to us.
