Senate Dems race to save Menendez in deep-blue New Jersey
The Hill ^ | 10/16/18 | REID WILSON

A Democratic super PAC with close ties to Senate leaders plans to spend $3 million on last-minute advertising aimed at saving Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), who faces an unexpectedly difficult race against a self-funding Republican businessman.

The Senate Majority PAC will spend money on statewide television advertising bashing Bob Hugin (R), the retired pharmaceutical CEO who has spent $15 million on his own campaign.

“Bob Hugin is a Trump sycophant who is funding his campaign off the millions he made raising prices on cancer drugs as a pharma CEO,” said Chris Hayden, a Senate Majority PAC spokesman.

Hayden said the ad would run in the New York and Philadelphia media markets, two of the most expensive markets in the country.

“Bob Hugin is independent and isn't afraid to stand up to anyone, including President Trump, to do what's right for New Jersey,” spokesman Nick Iacovella said in an email.

“Bob launched his campaign vowing not to be influenced by special interests groups or their money. He's not a politician, he didn't come up through the political ranks, and he isn't filling out special interest questionnaires.”

Hugin has vastly outspent Menendez on television. This week, he paid to air a 60-second spot bringing up old allegations that Menendez was involved with prostitutes. Menendez has vehemently denied those allegations.

On its face, New Jersey is a deep blue state. Hillary Clinton beat President Trump there by 14 points in 2016.

But Menendez has seen his already-low approval ratings sink even more after going on trial on corruption charges. The Department of Justice dropped the charges after the trial ended in a hung jury last November.

In a sign of his potential weakness, Menendez won only 62 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary against Lisa McCormick, a virtually unknown activist who beat Menendez in six of New Jersey’s 21 counties.

Polls taken after Labor Day show Menendez leading Hugin, though by relatively small margins. The latest survey, a YouGov poll conducted for CBS News, showed Menendez ahead 49 percent to 39 percent.

It is NJ. The Dems will win by whatever means necessary, including voter fraud.

Memendez will probably win but dems being forced to spend money defending NJ is good for other close races where the fix isn’t in. Obama dorked things up (go figure) but punishing Memendez for opposing his Iranian adventures by putting him on trial. He made a 100% lock election into a nail biter. But in the end, the dem hangs on thanks to treachery and stupid dem voters, the same ones that gave the election to a man with dementia rather than elect a republican when crooked Torricelli dropped out a month before the election.

Is that why they need to inform low info voters in North NJ that Menendez is still breathing?

He’s gonna win anyway, so why blanket the NYC/Trenton area with ads?

NJ Freepers need to get out and push for Hugin. He at least has a chance. He may not be the conservative that we want but he deserves a shot.

Thanks to Rich Pezzullo, GOP candidate for the 6th District against Frank Pallone, for opening the door to Bob Hugin’s candidacy in the first place. Hugin got into the race because of his ability to self-finance most of it, so Pezzullo graciously took the GOP’s offer of endorsing his House run. Win-win-win for Hugin, Pezzullo, and the NJ GOP.

Insurance. I grew up in Jersey City. My grandfather was a ward healer for Mayor Hague. The Dems will ensure that enough votes are manufactured in Hudson and Essex counties to win. The stakes are too high for the Dems to let this race get away.

Beto is scamming the world. He knows he is a loser against Cruz. So let quarter he raises $38,000,000. The Mob asks him to help out other Mob cAndidates. Beto said “no”. Why? What he does not spend he keeps. This might be A $20,000,000 payday. He can ride his skateboard into the sunset.

I love the Tactic of going after a guy who agrees with Trump.

That means that same guy agrees with Record Job Creation, the Constitution, Fair Trade Deals and a Strong Military.

It’s like they are running a Commercial supporting the Republican Candidate.

I just saw an ad for Beto here in Texas he speaks only in platitudes never says what he stands for. The thing I did notice is they had a close up of his face and he had cold sores on his lips yuck.

I hope they play that commercial alot and people see him like I did.

Menendez’s trips to Lolita Island have not been used enough to disqualify him in the minds of undecided voters.

...he had cold sores on his lips yuck.

I had one of those last week, and yuck is right. But that's the least of a long list of reasons to oppose him.

In 2016 there were Trump signs all over the state of NJ. It’s only in places like Newark, Jersey City and Trenton where Democrats have power. But they’re the places where the power is.

Bob Hugin killed his chance of winning in the beginning with the television ad telling people he was pro abortion, a baby killer.
