Pope Francis has conferred sainthood on murdered Salvadoran Archbishop Óscar Romero at a ceremony in the Vatican.
He praised the cleric - an advocate for peace during El Salvador's civil war - for sacrificing his own safety to be "close to the poor and his people".
Óscar Romero was killed by soldiers while giving Mass in 1980. His killers have never been brought to justice.
Pope Francis also canonised Pope Paul VI, known for making reforms to the Catholic Church in the 1960s.
The bestowing of a sainthood onto Archbishop Romero has long been called for by Catholics in the region, the BBC's Will Grant reports.
What is happening today?
Pope Francis led a ceremony to elevate the two men, and five others, to sainthood in Saint Peter's Square.
"We declare and define Paul VI and Óscar Arnulfo Romero Galdámez... to be saints and we enrol them among the saints, decreeing that they are to be venerated as such by the whole church," he told a crowd of 60,000 people, including multiple heads of state.
The pope wore the blood-stained rope belt worn by Archbishop Romero when he was murdered and used the chalice and pastoral staff of Pope Paul VI.
The Argentine pontiff, Latin America's first, has hailed both men for their bravery during difficult times and their dedication to social justice and the oppressed.
Among the other newly appointed saints include an Italian orphan who died of bone cancer aged 19 and a German nun.
Thousands of pilgrims gathered to pay tribute to the new saints, including some 5,000 Salvadorans.
Who was Óscar Romero?
Archbishop Romero was beatified in May 2015 in a ceremony in El Salvador which drew huge crowds.
For the faithful, his power came from the fact he criticised both sides of the El Salvadoran conflict,

Love how the article mentions “US-backed” death squads and yet omits the Role the Cubans and Sandinistas played in the conflict.
Wasn’t he the one who supported the Communist terrorists?
I don’t know, did he? Because I’ve read a bit on the conflict in El Salvador but never really knew all that much about Romero.
I saw the movie and read the biography for Romero back in my academy days (high school) , for a paper I had to submit back then. Highly recommended movie and the lead actor Raul Julia was more known for his Adams Family movies.
What were the miracles?
Yes he was a big leftist.
Hey we’re lucky. If McCarrick had died, Francis might have beatified him.
They shot him with a cannon?
What were the miracles? ............ He went from a Communist Sympathizer to a Saint. Who killed him??? You’ll have to find the people who were ARENA, to find out. Roberto D’. passed away a while back due to cancer. I’m sure he knew.
He was a filthy commie. Hiding behind his robes and his church didn’t and shouldn’t have saved him.
Canonizing a Communist ? Blasphemous.
If you are Catholic I believe what you stated is heretical.
Roberto D’Aubuisson was accused of the assassination repeatedly by Leftists and Jimmy Carter’s Ambassador Robert White joined in and pushed all the Leftist propaganda about El Salvador.
When Leftist military high command figures like Lopez Nuila would go on television and make their case against D’Aubuisson, the Major would buy his own television time to refute the accusations point by point. The Left even tried to say that a .257 Roberts was used because it was D’Aubusson’s name (such was the strength of the Leftist case).
D’Aubuisson saved the lives of many campesionos by smuggling out the names of Guardia Nacional and other security force contacts and informants to keep them out of the hands of the communists. He was the leader who was not socialist or communist while the U.S. Embassy supported the so-called Christian Democrats (socialists) as the opposition foil to the FMLN communists. Naturally socialists keep the poor at their poorest.
No, it's not heretical. The pope is not infallible when he names saints. Catholics are not required to believe that whomever the pope names as a saint is a saint.

There were some who confused the agiornemento of Vatican II with anything goes sexual libertine-ism.
One could point to this as the beginning of the end. Although I have a high opinion of JPII, all the other Popes in my lifetime seem to have failed the flock. Homosexuals seized power and have corrupted the youth and forced out people like BXVI.
Note: I am not Catholic, and I don't mean to be offensive, but the Roman Church seems like it's a shadow of its former self.
