In my estimation, Sherman was the greatest general in American history (Washington gives him a run for his money, though). He understood war. He ended the Civil War, decisively.
They’re so transparent.
Lee should have listened to Longstreet at Gettysburg. However, he was actually quite ill in ‘63. He had a heart attack and was probably not up to snuff for the campaign. He was also desperate to make a bold move to try and bring a conclusion to the War. He knew what the ultimate end would be if he didn’t.
Please don’t say that in Georgia.
I am really not welcome in Georgia, for some reason. Fond of peaches, though...

“Robert E. Lee was the better general. Grant had more troops, equipment and supplies.”
Bingo, I stated this on another thread:
“Robert E Lee was arguably a far superior General compared to anyone the North could field.
He was amazingly successful until the vey end with significantly less men, supplies, money and armaments than his northern counterparts.
Time was on the Norths side and they simply wore him down.”
My father’s people... are from Fairfax in northern Virginia, just across the Mason-Dixon line. So it was an honor to play Lee, he was a great general.
Robert Duvall
August 9, 1960
Dear Dr. Scott:
Respecting your August 1 inquiry calling attention to my often expressed admiration for General Robert E. Lee, I would say, first, that we need to understand that at the time of the War between the States the issue of secession had remained unresolved for more than 70 years. Men of probity, character, public standing and unquestioned loyalty, both North and South, had disagreed over this issue as a matter of principle from the day our Constitution was adopted.
General Robert E. Lee was, in my estimation, one of the supremely gifted men produced by our Nation. He believed unswervingly in the Constitutional validity of his cause which until 1865 was still an arguable question in America; he was a poised and inspiring leader, true to the high trust reposed in him by millions of his fellow citizens; he was thoughtful yet demanding of his officers and men, forbearing with captured enemies but ingenious, unrelenting and personally courageous in battle, and never disheartened by a reverse or obstacle. Through all his many trials, he remained selfless almost to a fault and unfailing in his faith in God. Taken altogether, he was noble as a leader and as a man, and unsullied as I read the pages of our history.
From deep conviction, I simply say this: a nation of men of Lees calibre would be unconquerable in spirit and soul. Indeed, to the degree that present-day American youth will strive to emulate his rare qualities, including his devotion to this land as revealed in his painstaking efforts to help heal the Nations wounds once the bitter struggle was over, we, in our own time of danger in a divided world, will be strengthened and our love of freedom sustained.
Such are the reasons that I proudly display the picture of this great American on my office wall.
Sincerely,
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Sherman introduced modern, total warfare. It would not be until the 1940’s that the world would have one word to describe his policies.
“I mean, Mr. Hamilton, there’s not a cannon factory in the whole South!”
While we’re at it don’t forget Gen. Nathanial Green, Gen. Lafayette, and Gen. Daniel Morgan!
Trump is running rings around the fake newsette.
Lee was overly-ambitious.
..........................................
Where did you get that malarkey? Lee was offered the Army by Lincoln and turned him down to fight for his homeland and family, Virginia. He was the greater General and by far the better man! BY FAR!
Yeah....
His campaign into Pennsylvania was ill-advised, and he didn’t listen to better advice and not fight at Gettysburg, but he felt the Army of NoVa as invincible, and that he could end the war there with one battle.
The rest was history
Sherman? Not in my book! Not EVER in my book!
Dan Morgan was far superior and Patton would leave Sherman in the dust!
Thanks Rhett.
Trump Derangement Syndrome sufferers will claim this is still a Dog Whistle for supporting slavery.
. If Dems ever became informed about the truth and facts, the Dem Party would cease to exist. The Resistance press must keep Dems uninformed.
