Utah Senate candidate and former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney claimed Saturday that he wasn't a leader in the "never Trump" movement among conservatives, and said some of the president's policies have been "pretty effective."
Romney was asked following a rally in support of Arizona Senate candidate Martha McSally (R) about where he stands with Trump given his fierce criticism of the president during the 2016 campaign.
"You led the never Trump movement. I mean, what happened with that?" a reporter asked, in a video posted online.
"I dont think that was the case," Romney responded. "President Trump was not the person I wanted to become the nominee of our party, but hes president now. The policies hes promoted have been pretty effective, and I support a lot of those policies."
When asked about his stance on President Trump, Mitt Romney denies that he led the Never Trump movement. Seen here at a gaggle after a rally for #AZSen candidate @MarthaMcSally
Meghan Keneally (@mkeneally) October 12, 2018 He then pivoted to discussing McSally's tight Senate race in Arizona, which he said will determine whether the country will be "guided by conservative principles, or are we going to take a sharp turn left."
Romney during the 2016 campaign delivered a speech blasting then-candidate Trump as a "phony," and a "fraud" who was "playing members of the American public for suckers."
The 2012 GOP presidential nominee and Trump have since patched things up, with the president offering his endorsement as Romney seeks to replace retiring Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) in the Senate.
Romney has asserted that while he agrees with Trump on a number of policy issues, he will speak out against the president on issues where he disagrees.
Two-faced Romney opens his mouth and takes the opposite position on an issue once again.
I am making this one exception and am rooting for the Democrat in UT.
Romney is the worst kind of Bush League Republican.
Bush League Republicans must become extinct before the Republic does.
Gee Mittens, no one gives a rats behind what you think..he’s trying to make nice nice with our base but it wont work, I know he’s a two faced phony
Polls are currently suggesting we could have a net pick up of 3 or more Senate seats - let us hope that is the case to offset the need for Romney.
Funny how Mittens and Lindsey changed their attitude once their ringleader, “Maverdick” McCain croaked.
You are right. Two faced is perfect.
The last thing we need coming in to the senate is another ass looking to run for President in 2020 that will sabotage everything Trump tries to do. We have enough of that on the other side!
Wasn’t it Romney who tied his dog to the roof of his station wagon before leaving for a family vacation?
Well you know that isn’t going to happen so just ignore him and hope for 3 or more Senate pick-ups so he won’t be needed.
And you have made a number of these “exceptions” over the years which would have resulted in the SCOTUS being under solid left-wing control at this point for decades to come.
Where’s that pic of Romney talking out seven different mouths?
I never trusted this AH.
Romney didn’t start the ‘neverTrump’ movement, but he didn’t hesitate to jump in front of the parade when he sought recognition. Truth is, people don’t and never will see Romney as a natural leader at anything. I suppose he’s still getting credit for running the Olympics, but that’s about the only credible claim to true leadership that he can properly claim.
His lips are moving again.
McRomeny says this just to get elected.
After he gets elected, he’ll likely turn into the next McQueeg.
What, he now realizes that he can’t win without Trump? Lots of Never Trumper losers rethinking their positions, lying about their past positions.
Romney will go which ever way the wind blows
If Romney was in my foxhole, I would jump out and throw a grenade in on him.
