Deranged liberal critics give Trump a boost
London Times ^ | 10/11/2018 | Gerard Baker

The Kavanaugh controversy has united Republicans as never before behind a president once viewed with deep suspicion.

Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad, we are told by the ancients. Donald Trump is no one’s idea of a god but his ability to reduce his opponents to wailing, gibbering husks, like demented characters in a Greek tragedy, seems increasingly Olympian in its reach. Last weekend, as Brett Kavanaugh, the president’s Supreme Court nominee, was finally being confirmed in the Senate, the Furies were unleashed and the Republicans’ foes took flight from the asylum...

The past few weeks have marked a turning point in US politics in a number of ways. It’s become commonplace to say that the formal and informal institutions of public life have been profoundly damaged...

For Mr Trump, though, it’s been perhaps the most successful phase of his presidency. For the first time since he swaggered onto the political stage and crashed the Republican Party, he has succeeded in uniting it behind him. The lingering doubts among Republicans about his probity, competence, conservative credentials and the risks he poses to the norms of liberal democracy and public discourse have been eclipsed by what they see as the exigencies of the fight against an opponent whose anger and loathing rises by the day.

Republicans are galvanised in a way they haven’t been since Mr Trump came to office. The midterm elections are just a few weeks away and it still looks as though Democrats will make gains. If they do, the pressure on Mr Trump is sure to intensify. But after a September to remember he seems certain to have more Republicans willing to back him, come what may.

Donald Trump looks an awful lot like JFK. He’s no uber rightist, historically speaking. It just is an amusing measure of how far left the Democrat party has slid that a JFK-like figure has them writhing in agony now. He only went GOP because the Democrats had no room for his vision.

If it weren’t for Euronews, we probably would miss half our own story. Our own “news” is a carnival.

Also, Psalm 2: God laughs from heaven at the scheming nations. They brought it on themselves. Now, being merciful yet, God extends the offer of Christ, but sometimes it takes a bad spiritual pratfall for a person to realize that he or she needs Christ.

While they are worse than the worst US source, their best is much better than the US average. So, yeah, heh, I agree. And vice versa in a way -- Tommy Robinson is exhibit a.

He our Charles De Gaulle. Donald Trump is a great man - a tragic, noble and commanding figure.

He has no peers, no equals and no rivals. Every one of his enemies looks small. He loves our country and adores its people and embodies in his person, the best of America.

I fear that we shall not look upon his likes again.

Nyah, nyah, nyah, European papers, they still have Trump swaggering across the political stage like some Mussolini. Trump sticks in their craw and they regard him with fear and dread from the little places they hide in.

The dread is mostly because they see the end of the gravy train. The United States is STILL paying for their excesses in refusing to provide for their own national defense and accepting the short end of the stick on one-sided trade deals. We just aren't doing it as much anymore.

Our unemployment rate is now about the same as the Czech Republic, one of the members of the EU who (wisely) decided not to backfill their labor shortage by importing unemployable third worlders who would, at best, be a short term fix and more likely would be a permanent drain on public coffers and public order. Smart.

Smarter still that neighboring countries including Hungary, Poland, Austria and Italy have seen the result and emulated them.

“I fear that we shall not look upon his likes again.”

Your fears are probably well justified. He may be the final clarion call.

Right there with you. The left long ago crossed al line that placed them beyond any hope of reconciliation. Now they must be defeated and completely dismantled as a political power.

Then maybe some of those who come around to reason once again can be salvaged.

Well, yeah. Nice of some Eurohole to notice.

Isn't this the Gerard Baker who used to be editor in chief of the Wall Street Journal? He's American.

Screw you, Brits.

What they're really saying is the President has no probity, is incompetent, not-conservative, and risky to our liberal democracy and public life, but, Republicans said "Screw all that, we're behind him anyways!"

That's called damning with faint praise.
