Executives at ABC now believe that their decision to fire Roseanne Barr from their revival of Roseanne was a mistake and the networks spin-off series The Conners may flop, according to a report from Mail Online. Two senior executives at the network told the outlet that ABC President Channing Dungeys decision to immediately fire the actress and cancel her show after she made racially charged comments about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett was a knee-jerk decision that they would later regret.
We didnt think it through properly. What Roseanne did was wrong but we shouldnt have rushed to fire her. It was almost a knee-jerk reaction by Ben [Sherwood] and Channing [Dungey] who should have launched an investigation, one insider reportedly said. This would have given them more time to listen to the public, advertisers and cast members to determine the best decision.
Barr compared Jarrett to if the Muslim brotherhood & Planet of the Apes had a baby, comments that were condemned by Dungey as abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values. Yet one insider apparently suggested that ABC should instead have temporarily suspended her before making a final decision.
They couldve suspended her from the first few episodes without pay and had her return later on in the season, the source explained. I mean the season finale saw Roseanne going to the hospital for knee surgery. While they worked out her fate, her character could have faced serious complications and fought for her life, while simultaneously making Roseanne fight for her career with a national apology tour.
The morning the racist tweet scandal blew up, Roseanne offered to publicly apologize and do the rounds of every show but Ben and Channing werent having any of that and wanted her gone, they continued.

All of their characters on the show, with the possible exception of John Goodman, are very unlikeable.
... What Roseanne did was wrong but we shouldnt have rushed to fire her..
Her description is that it was a political comment regarding Jarrett’s bequeathed Iran policy and its’ support of totalitarians.
Such BS....comparing someones *behavior* to a character from the movie Planet of the Apes is not racially charged.
Bring her back—as flashbacks or as a ghost. Have one of the cast go Trumpocrat to spar with others. A few scenes would save the show.
After mulling it over, I think you're right. Some f-ups are permanent. They could try to erase these past few months, pretend nothing happened, scrap the season and bring Roseanne back but it wouldn't be the same.
There's a lot of anger not only in how Roseanne was treated by ABC but also towards her co-stars, not a single one of whom had the integrity to stand up for her. At any time Goodman or Metcalf could have said, "this isn't going to work" and Roseanne would've been brought back but instead, clueless about their own fan base, they thought they could still have lightning in a bottle without the show's star.
Best thing for Roseanne Barr to do now would be to leave the Connor family in the past and find something new and original as a platform for her talents.
I was disappointed the most in John Goodman for thinking the Roseanne-free "Roseanne" would work. It seemed like if anyone should've put his foot down and stood up for her, it should've been him.
He's enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an actor and will now be remembered for having zero integrity in the end when it counted.
abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.
ABC and values? Since when!
Just saw a commercial, it was very dramatic, pretty clear the characters are reacting to Roseanne being dead/dying/comatose, you’d think the show was a drama. Then the ABC log and the word “Funny” appeared.
Anyone out there watching this thing tonight??????
I am skipping it.
Not me. Not a single minute of it.
